curious about dz
by: PnmWhy does DZ have 100+ less members than all other NPC houses in campus? Seems unusual and they're getting a giant house. Will it be easier to get a bid there this recruitment?

DZ tried to be selective since they have the new house and were tired of being bottom of the bottom. They thought they had no where to go but up. It didn't go as planned since they lost their top target OOS PNMs to GPhi and Theta who both had really strong recruitments. They ended up taking a lot less girls and they were not those at the top of their list. Then they had those that dropped and now they are at a real disadvantage. The house may help some but most PNMs will not be swayed and will realize that everyone has great houses so that is not an issue anymore.

This past rush DZ changed their recruitment style... Instead of taking a large mix of girls which they usually do they took a smaller mix of girls who were more "one type." So for example, a regular DZ pledge class is mixed, you have OOS party girls with average grades, bookworms, quiet girls, and so forth. But last year DZ tried really hard to curate a pledge class that was comprised of mainly party girls. However, I use the term "party girl" loosely... DZ's "party girl" is much more toned down that say APhi/ZTA/KD/KKG.
The biggest goal with this tactic was to create a more concise pledge class. DZ has a lot of new girls drop and DZ figured a main reason was because the house is so split in terms of personalities. However this tactic failed. DZ's '17 pledge class was significantly smaller than what it usually is... I THINK they took around 120 girls when they usually take around 150? Not sure on exact numbers but you get the gist. Handfuls of new girls still dropped and DZ was left with a smaller than usual '17 pledge class which is a huge hit in terms of financing for their new house.
On top of that, a lot of actives tend to drop throughout the year... Not just with DZ but with a lot of NR houses. My roommate is actually a DZ and she dropped in the mid semester in the Fall.

My guess is that it was a strategic move (as people have noted above) to try and make their PC more cohesive and avoid quota additions who would either only have DZ for pref if they kept them or would be too low on other houses bid lists (I’m assuming quota additions are why Theta’s PC was giant)
I see the benefits of that plan, but I think it was an interesting choice because DZ barely had enough actives in the house to rush PNMs this year and I would think risking that happening again would be something they’d want to avoid. Especially because DZ (as with basically all the NR houses so no shade to them) has a decent chunk of girls drop each semester so imo they are not leaving themselves a lot of room for error when it comes to numbers
