Why does alpha phi pronounce “phi” as “fe” ? I’ve just always wondered and understand this is done nationally so not trolling. Thanks!

I've heard that too, but Gamma Phi (fie) and Alpha Phi(fee) both come after an "A".

It would be the A that represents “alpha” as a letter, not the a at the end of the word. So gamma phi is “fye” because the letter G precedes it. Sorry if that’s confusing but think of it in terms of actual Greek letters.

In any case, it’s probably just what their founders wanted when they picked the letters. I did see a recruitment video from a small school where the girls pronounced it fye and it was super weird.

Because their nationals chose the Greek pronunciation rather than the English pronunciation of the letter Phi.

It is actually how some letters are pronounced after following Alpha.
Alpha Phi being Fee
Alpha Xi Delta is Alpha Zee Delta and not Alpha Zi Delta
