will the pledge classes be smaller because they are adding a new sorority?

Depends on how many girls sign up for recruitment. SK is going to be taking a lot of upperclassmen who might not have otherwise rushed, and some girls will not take part in recruitment to join, but the majority will come from girls who went through recruitment and didn't like what they had left, decided that they might actually enjoy SK and being a founding member, or any number of reasons.

Some people say people who were dropped from recruitment completely will go SK, but since those girls are usually grade or personal risks, I can't imagine SK would take them either.

Please someone correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand SK is not going all the way through formal recruitment, they have an open house round and then after rush they're going to hold their own recruitment for the girls who have yet to pledge. Whether these be people who were dropped or girls that decided to not go through formal recruitment. So no because the amount of girls will still be evenly distributed across the 16 houses that they were last year. BUT i'm hoping less girls sign up for rush and more get cut than last year because they changed the GPA cutoff but I honestly don't know if that many with get dropped completely considering Alpha phi may need to take more risks than usual and thetas interest will be decreased because they are the only ones without a house stil.

I think girls are going to be better off going APhi and so much better off with Theta then SK. I also think rushing out of the stadium will be fine for theta as all the girls know their house will be done for their sophomore year and beyond. There was a lot of excitement when we opened our new house and it is really cool to be a part of it. That should be a bump for theta. Those that rush SK are taking a huge risk and will take time to be taken seriously. The GPA change will cut a lot of girls and it looks like we are registering Leeds girls for July already. It will be interesting.

And because Panhellenic is dropping the upperclassmen quota because of SK, lots of good girls will be cut. They can’t compete. Panhellenic hopes the upperclassmen are funneled to the new sorority rather than not be a part of Greek life. Hopefully the new group of upperclassmen that are dropped will not be too bitter because of the quota change to benefit SK. Doubtful tho. Not a good way to start

What if I Am Not a Freshman and I Want to Participate in Recruitment?

Provided you are a full-time female student and have not been initiated into another NPC sorority at UA or on another campus, you can participate in formal recruitment. UA utilizes a separate quota for freshman and upperclassman, and a PNM’s classification is determined by their year of high school graduation. A Potential New Member, who graduated high school prior to December 2017, is considered an upperclassman. The Upperclass/Secondary Quota, which is a separate from the Freshman/Primary Quota is used to specifically place upperclassmen and transfer students. This dual-quota system gives ALL women participating in recruitment a greater opportunity to pledge a sorority.

^^ The Greek Chic smoking gun to fix SK with upperclassmen forced out of recruitment. No bid day because of Pan Love? Enjoy your colony of bitterness SK

Actually it looks like they copied straight from the panhel website. It says “graduated high school prior to December 2017” which was last December, making it current for this year’s recruitment. If it was from last year’s greek chic it would say December 2016.

Anyways, even if they did remove it, I seriously doubt many upperclassmen will be impacted. There’s no stigma in taking sophomores anymore. The houses will still take whichever sophomores they want, and whoever’s at the bottom of the list will still get bumped regardless of year.

Will be smaller but less have also registered for rush than last year according to Panhellenic’s Insta. Unless 600 register in the next 14 days, the number will be lower anyway. Cutting the upperclassmen will lower the number too

Unlike freshman quota, houses are not and have never been required to meet upperclassman quota. It’s there so that the houses don’t have to feel like they are sacrificing a freshman bid to take a sophomore. Many sophomores who get bids have made a lot of friends in a specific house and are likely going to get a bid whether there is an upperclassman quota or not. (Also, some houses don’t take upperclassmen anyway.)

Will there probably be a few who fall through the cracks? Yes, but they probably didn’t do the work this past year to make serious connections and great grades. I don’t think this is something to be upset over. In all honestly it will probably help the lower houses because of the trickle down effect.

Yep, this. In all honesty it may not have to do with SK at all if they do remove it. The upperclassmen with grades and recs will still get bids like any freshman would, and really it may help weed out some of the freshmen who don’t actually deserve bids with the trickle down effect like you mentioned.

Quota is low this year. It’s a range but it’s still low, we talked about it at a Panhellenic meeting

Well, what is the range to discussed?

I’m assuming it’s a calculated range based on the number of PNMs signed up (or projected to sign up if this was during school). Panhellenic isn’t allowed to artificially set a quota cause it’s based on the number who make it to pref. Probably the number signed up minus 2 or 3 hundred divided by 16

Quota is a formula of the number of PNMs left for pref divided by the number of houses. So long as you maximize your options and come prepared, your rush shouldn’t be affected. I do think we’ll see a rise in PNMs who SIP, but otherwise who knows

400 fewer PNMs registered this year. Yes, pledge classes will be smaller.
