tuscaloosa
by: ?I'm considering Alabama as a school and am curious what types of things people do in their free time in Tuscaloosa when there's not a Greek event or football game

Tbh there's very little to do in Tuscaloosa besides drink. Tuscaloosa is a college town and is basically in the middle of nowhere. The closest city is Birmingham but even Bham is iffy. Montgomery is another hour or two. And Atlanta is 3. New Orleans is cool though and only a 4 hour drive. But anyways, there's not much to do in my opinion. Of course you can find cool things to do on the weekend like go to the Riverwalk or go to a concert at Druid but in terms of like constant activity there's nothing. It's not like a major city where you can constantly explore the town or walk around and shop.
But nonetheless Tuscaloosa is great. The atmosphere is amazing if you enjoy something more laid-back.

Having grown up in Tuscaloosa before now attending Bama, I can tell you that Tuscaloosa is a really cool place... however, it can take time to appreciate it. I used to view it as having very little in the way of entertainment, or even just nuances that added to the overall "coolness" and vibe of the city. However, this is not true. You have to be a tourist in your own town in a place like Ttown simply because of the size! Get out and try new things, whether it be cool new restaurants popping up downtown, free concerts in the plaza, or hunting down local food trucks. There are super cool things to do in Tuscaloosa, and the overall vibe of the city is really awesome once you get to know it. You just won't automatically have a million possible activities at your fingertips like you would in a huge city like Austin, but a lot of the time that creates for more interesting experiences in my opinion!

generally speaking if the greek scene at a school is great, that just means the city has very little to offer.
there are some people that claim tuscaloosa is the greatest place on earth with so much to do, but these people mostly grew up on farms.
if you are form any decent size city, it'll be very boring with little to offer, that's why people go greek here.
same thing with vandy, nashville has a lot of offer and is a fun city that's why their greek system is weak. same thing why the LA rams can't fill a 40,000 seat stadium...they play in LA and LA has a ton to offer so they don't care about football.
unless you are from bham to where you can go home every weekend, or you are involved on campus that makes you really busy (i.e. you play a sport or are pre-med and trying to go to a private good med school), then i'd stay away from this place if you don't plan on going greek.
and if you go greek, and even though the town in small with little to offer, you'll have fun with your bro/sis

Birmingham is actually great and only 45 mins from campus. Better for older students than freshmen
