bid list

by: PNM

Do the top tier houses like Phi Mu, KD, Alpha Chi, DDD etc have higher retention rates than others? Like if they make 3 bid lists do they most often get their original bid list and maybe some girls from the second??? I’m just scared of putting one of those houses first and not getting a bid because I’m not high enough on the list

Generally speaking, OR houses tend to have higher retention rates than NR houses. HOWEVER, a HUGE reason for this is because OR houses have a higher amount of instate girls who view Greek life as a status thing. It's hard to explain, but a lot of instate girls still have very antiquated views on Greek life. Their mothers and grandmothers more than likely went to Bama and were in OR houses. These girls are now legacies and they've known they were going to be in XYZ before they ever even applied to Bama. These girls go into rush knowing they're getting a bid to XYZ, either because they're a legacy and/or they have in-house connections - mind you, OR houses are basically high school 2.0 for instate girls. Anyways, this effects retention because these girls feel like they NEED to be in XYZ.

Except very few girls can be absolutely positive that they are going to XYZ because they are a legacy or know people.

I'm in an old row house, and while legacy status and who you know is a HUGE help for girls (and in-state obviously has a HUGE advantage), you have to know the right people, and legacy status doesn't hold the weight it used to. We get so many legacies, we couldn't possibly bid them all. Not to mention that in my house, we don't care how many family members were in ABC. If your grades suck or you have a bad reputation, you still won't get a bid.

Totally agree that some Alabama girls grow up thinking that XYZ is the only option. That's why some drop if they didn't get invited back to whatever house they believe is their only option. I guess being a GDI is better than not being an XYZ to some people.

I would be aware that houses like KD/ Kappa have a huge legacy presence and that these girls will go their legacy house. I feel like Phi Mu and Alpha Chi don’t have as strong as a legacy presence so they don’t have as many girls who are so certain they are going them (legacy wise) if that makes sense

Kappa, DDD, XO, and KD (specifically in state) have so many legacies in the South and nationwide that being an upper-middle legacy can be somewhat of a curse. Well connected girls with good grades who are A+++ PNMs can have their choice of house pretty much, no matter their legacy status.

But for a lot of competitive houses, if they see that you have a legacy to a popular house and you yourself are a somewhat strong PNM (maybe you have grades, activities, and looks but not connections) they assume you would choose your legacy house when it comes down to it and they will drop your early on.

I knew a XO legacy who went to a prestigious private school (unfortunately for her not in Mississippi), had good grades, but was a bit on the chubbier side and got dropped. Sort of similar situation with a lot of the sororities I meantioned up there. If you have an in house sister then you are really screwed.

Most of the OR sororities will take you if you are a legacy even though they may not care about you or whether you go elsewhere. If you pledge and are not one they really care about, it’s not a pleasant ride.

They assume their legacies will pledge them and lost some BIG time connected, really great girls in the last couple of years who did what was best for them and not for their sister/mama/High school friend/ whoever and guess what- their families still supported their choices!

Do your own thing!! If you don’t fit with your legacy sorority or just like another better... go for what’s best for you. Truly admire those who do!

Wrong. Legacy status helps at Old Row but they turn away more legacies than they take. Only a definite bid for sister in house.

They won’t cut you unless they just flat out have reason. Not like the old days- have to make quota and quota is High. If you are a legacy in any way related to the chapter here, you are pretty much in. Not welcomed, but in.

Base your rankings on how you feel about the houses, not what you think they will feel about you, but also be prepared that your favorites may drop you. You should not worry about retention rates or the other PNMs since you have no control over that. If you like KD, rank them first because they may like you, but, as with all houses, they may also drop you.

So, present your best self, make your list based on how you feel, and know that all of the houses can offer you a great experience, not just OR or "top ranked" houses.
