better not have a full card?

It depends. You may have multiple blocks of time in a row where you're not scheduled for a party in which case you usually are allowed to go back to your room. But you may also have a choppy schedule where you have a block of free time but a party scheduled immediately after in which you won't have enough time to go back to your room.

Also, after the first round, everyone will have a lot of breaks in their schedule because the houses need to hold more parties than the number of parties a PNM with a full schedule will have. Be prepared for down time (not necessarily enough to go to your dorm) no matter what!
