how does sorority leadership work here?

by: Pnm

I'm from far OOS and am the first in my immediate family to go greek/come to UA. I was just wondering how leadership positions within sororities get chosen here and what they do. I know top positions are by election but since I don't know anyone and would like to start getting some leadership experience asap are there smaller positions that are easier to get if you don't already know people? I've also seen stuff about certain sororities only having girls from certain high schools or prominent southern families in leadership positions. How do I find out during rush if I will be able to get a leadership position without coming off as rude?

In my house, there are elections once a year (at the end of fall semester) to change the cabinets. And, at least in my house, almost all positions are secured through elections. And there were quite a few second semester freshman who won positions after the elections. There are obviously other "leadership" roles such as the t shirt chair and the Panhellenic rep which are given to those based on applications with no elections being held.

If you want a leadership position while you're a first semester freshman it really just comes down to whether or not your house has any positions open, which they usually don't if I'm being honest. I knew one girl who rushed last year and she ended up filling in for an exec position but to get that kind of opportunity is generally pretty rare.

During rush you should definitely let the houses know that you are very interested in obtaining a position in the future. There's really no wrong way you could go about it, just be open and don't be super pushy.

Also, you don't necessarily need a leadership position to make new friends and meet people. Once you accept a bid, you gain literally 400 sisters with about 150 girls just in your pledge class. Meeting new people will not be a struggle.

As a PNM, volunteer to help out with house event jobs, go to chapter, go to events, keep grades up. Leadership positions can require a lot of work, which can impact grades, so showing you can volunteer and keep up grades is a good start. Continually showing you are dependable by always showing up to help will get you known and noticed by current officers.

In my house the more important positions are elected, but smaller ones are appointed by the new VP from girls who sumbitted an interest form/ application. It’s a great way to get involved freshman year in the house!

PNM here as well! How many houses (or which houses if y'all can say) has politics play a big part in who gets Exec positions? Like are there times when the 3x legacy gets chosen because her mom and grandma have been involved in that chapter forever? Only rich girls or only the pretty girls get pushed by senior members? I guess I'm asking as an OOS but still Southern PNM who doesn't have tons of connections but wondering if the door is shut to me already.

I’ll answer, but this sounds like a troll fishing for answers versus a PNM. If you are responsible, friendly, smart, represent the house well, and show real interest in being involved, you will get a position. I will say most recruitment chair positions are in-state or close to in-state girls just because of the need to be close to Tuscaloosa throughout the summer. However, the houses need people heading up recruitment teams from all over the country. If you’re from far OOS, if you’re something like t-shirt chair your first year along with being a recruitment team lead (AND you do a really good job) that puts you in a good position to run for an exec position your second year. This way all the girls in your house know you and know you’ll do a good job.

I really am a PNM, I promise! Not trying to stir up a mess or anything, but I've always been involved in SGA and NHS stuff in high school and I'd really like to continue that kind of involvement in college. But I keep hearing that a lot of these positions are reserved for in-state, legacy, and camp friends so I was wondering if there's much use in trying.

Don't go kappa, kd, or really any exclusive OR house then. They have their exec handpicked pretty much every year from in state/southern girls only and you wot have a chance. No hate to those houses but I'm being honest u deserve to know this if you're interested in being on exec
