What are y'alls opinion on SK? Like how do y'all think they'll do in rush? I know they've been making huge pushes both on campus and on social media for this upcoming rush. And I also know there are a lot of mixed feelings from actives toward a new sorority joining.

It's a great sorority nationally! Wishing them great success returning to Bama!

the consultants/nationals for SK worked pretty closely with the recruitment team (rhi chis and j boards) last year during rush/work week. They were so sweet and seemed so excited to be joining the Panhellenic community and providing the true sorority experience for the girls that choose to colonize. I’m excited for them!

As an active, I can honestly say that not many other actives are genuinely excited to have to welcome a new sorority. Houses here want stricter regulations on who is qualified to rush as well as more control over who they can drop.

As of right now, Panhellenic allows any girl who has committed to UA to rush. The only form of "discouragement" seen from Panhellenic is when they say girls with under a 3.0 "may not" get as many returns as someone with a higher GPA. This hurts houses because it perpetuates the idea that everyone who rushes "should" end up in a house and leaves very, very little room for houses to make their own decisions over PNMs... When Panhellenic is telling you that X amount of girls are rushing and 95% of them need to be given a bid it literally leaves houses, especially "lower ranked" houses, at a huge disadvantage. And circling back to the GPA thing, because Panhellenic doesn't have a grade cut off it forces houses to take grade risks which really hurts houses.

I could go on and on about how a low bid match rate would benefit this Greek community but I'll keep it short. The point is that houses here face a big disadvantage in various aspects because Panhellenic wants to maintain the idea that "everyone finds a home." Instead of investing millions by bringing in a new sorority because the ones here are bursting at the seams, why not at least TRY lowering the bid match rate.

What does any of your elitist drivel have to do with SK?

We could have all of these things and still get SK! As someone in a lower house I agree with pretty much everything you said but we’ll benefit from a new sorority either way.

I agree with most of what you’re saying. But, we have the space in a swing house now to allow for SK. I have friends who are rising juniors and seniors who never did sorority life ( a couple due to financial issues- couldn’t afford it for more than a year or two and didn’t want to take a spot to drop/ one because of her programs internship while taking classes) and now kind of regret it. They wanted a larger sorority than SDT. These girls are involved and have great grades. If they can have a home in SK, then why not?

UA requires that all women can participate if they want. If you want a better pool of PNMs go to a school that takes better students.

Well if it's mandatory that all girls are allowed to participate then there shouldn't be such a hard push from Panhellenic to have such a high bid match rate.

It's going to kill rush for SDT, ADX, and a bunch of other off-campus groups. Low dues going in, low engagement, low bar-of-entry, it'll be perfect.

I don't know why you'd say "low engagement, low bar-of-entry." Colonizing a chapter is hard work and takes a lot of involvement and leadership on the part of the founding members. No room for anyone who isn't willing to step up and they aren't going to take just anyone who is interested. The interview process will be geared to vet the girls who only want to sign up to get some letters and be dead weight.

to go off what you said about there not being a cut off for grades, i know houses with lower gpas also feel like they can't really change... these houses (such as aphi, dz, gphi) are forced to take grade risks and they can't necessarily "choose" girls with higher grades because they don't necessarily have the upper hand during rush as other more desired houses do. and if we're being honest, a girl who didn't do too well in high school isn't going to suddenly become a straight a student in college.

ALL houses would benefit from being able to be more selective during rush.
