theta

I don't get it. People always say theta is bottom but then in The next breath everybody talks about how great they are. Sisterhood is great, girls are leaders and involved, etc. So then how are they bottom tier? Which is it???

Honestly every sorority here is great. People rank to make their own house look better. Theta is strong in a lot of areas, and seems to be on the upswing

Rush is very competitive at Alabama compared to other schools so getting a bid to any house is something to be proud of and excited about, even if it's considered "bottom"!!

I'd go as far as to say that getting into a "bottom tier" sorority at Bama is as difficult/equivalent to getting into a "middle tier" sorority at a northern state school.

I have friends in a few different sororities @ Michigan State and during their rush it really is as simple as if they think you'll fit in with them. They have a grade cutoff and I could be remembering it wrong but I think it's only anyone with below a 3.0 gets automatically cut after the first round, and even that's only for a few chapters

I am glad I am not the only one very confused about Theta and have also read so many conflicting things about them. There are discussions about them say nice things about their great sisterhood, high grades, leadership and involvement on campus. At first I am thinking they sound admirable, but then all the ranks put them last every time and I have also seen comments saying girls cry if they get a bid there and are embarrassed to be Thetas. I've read about some embarrassing things other houses are dealing with, but I have not read about anything embarrassing attached to Theta. Which is it? Are they admirable or the worst? If they are the worst, what overshadows the good things you read about to put them at the bottom of the ranks?

Because of the high campus Panhellenic RFM and perception that bids are matched from top houses > bottom houses. So the OR supposedly gets the
star PNM and everyone else competes for the rest who are typically less connected, 1stGen college or Greek, OOS, unpopular in-state, etc.

The machine doesn't like theta. That's why they are constantly insulted on here - or at least it is a big part of it

Would Theta be better off joining the machine? Why or why not

@S Hell no. But then again, I don't think any sorority at Bama should be a part of the machine.

All above are true, but the above do not answer why Thetas are highly though of but also ranked at the bottom. Honestly, they are "the woman makes the sorority, not the sorority makes the woman" house. First, as #4 mentioned, they are looking for quality women and are going to pick academics over looks, involvement over connections, and they don't care where you are from if you posses admirable qualities. If you are on board with this, you will rank Theta pretty high, hence the good comments you see. However, as you see on GR, there are plenty of houses that really value their in-state pull, or the exclusivity of connections needed to get into their house, or weigh looks heavily, so if you are looking for the status of a "hard to get into house" or a a beautiful house, Theta will be low on your list. Its all good, all these houses also have terrific qualities, just a different weight put on each. There are thousands of women in the Greek system, each has their own set of priorities. You definitely want to find the house that fits with what you value.

Secondly, all sororities are pro-woman, but Theta asserts that agenda a little more than the other houses. As already mentioned, Theta is the only sorority that is not part of the Machine, and they will never join it as that organization is male dominated and really only allows women members to build their voting block power. Some member organizations make it a point to always put Theta last in every ranking. On the flip side, that extra focus on supporting women may be why Theta has such a strong sisterhood reputation.

When it comes to recruitment, Theta is not going to offer PNMs any additional status, rather it seems they are are looking for PNMs with a track record that implies they can earn that on their own. However, they do offer a house organization that will strongly support their members. Unfortunately, some women really are looking for something different on bid day and are disappointed. TBH, if any PNM is crying or embarrassed on bid day at Theta, they really are out of sync with the core values of that house and their fellow PNMs and maybe should consider dropping.

Theta also has a fantastic alum network (if that hasn't been mentioned already), so membership does have its rewards both undergrad and post-
collegiate imo.

I believe the above two comments to be spot on. Every Theta I know IRL has the look and feel of a strong old soul.

Yea #7. I would even say one of the reasons Theta does not care if they are bottom on this site is because its working for them. It weeds out all the superficial PNMs who can not think for themselves and have to go with what others think is best.

If you understood anything about Greek Life and social hierarchy then you'd know that great sisterhood, grades, and involvement doesn't automatically make you top tier.
