would you pay for recs?

by: Lily

Hi I'm an alumna of a sorority with a large national footprint and I usually write about 20-30 letters of recommendation each year, including Alabama. It seems however that there's a much stronger emphasis on recs lately, or maybe much higher recruitment numbers, as I am being bombarded left and right with requests for letters of recommendation, many from girls I don't even know! (someone must have passed my info along as a person to reach out to)

Anyway, I'm getting pretty burnt out from meeting up for coffee, reading resumes and writing recs over and over and over again so I thought maybe I should start charging for letters. Especially if I don't know the girl and have to interview her and work from scratch.

The big question is how much should I charge? Let's assume there's a market for this, as demand is very high and many girls seem desperate for recs. I figure if people don't want to pay it will at least lessen the number of letters I have to write.

So PNMs, would you pay $10 for a good recommendation? $25? How about $100 for a rec? Actives, think about how much recs were worth to you when you were going through recruitment. How much would you pay? I hope this doesn't offend anyone, as it is an honest question.

Horrible idea. In my opinion, rec letters are earned based on the characteristics of the pnm, they aren't bought. Also, there are most likely thousands of alum from your sorority who are willing to write one for free, if you charge you just won't make money because they'll find someone else. And if they can't find someone else they'll probably just go through recruitment without a rec, i doubt missing one rec will be the end all be all of their rush experience. I went through rush with two rec letters and ended up in an OR house I didn't have a recommendation for lol

Ok the idea of charging for recs is ludicrous but I don't really get why people are being so holier than thou about it. As a Pnm getting recs for every house is hard and stressful. I remember contacting friends of friends of family friends from like church, pretty much strangers, and meeting them for lunch or getting interviewed over the phone about my resume so they could write me a rec. I mean we all have personally asked for rec letters from alumnae we didnt personally know, or at least know of girls who did this during rush. It happens all the time, I don't know why folks are pretending like it doesn't.

If a red writer cas compensated, ethics would require this fact to be disclosed and the disclosure would undermine the rec value. Just be more selective in who you write for.

why? there are no rules or laws against asking for money for recs, it's a moral decision and trolls have no morals so it wouldn't matter to them

if anything this shows how much of an unreasonable standard panhellenic puts on pnm's. they say recs are optional but everyone here says you need them to have any chance at a decent sorority. but no one is so well connected that they know 1-2 alumns of each sorority well enough to get "honest" letters. even when the sorority helps pnm's get recs that really isn't any different from paying a stranger to write you a letter.

i would pay $50 or more for a good recommendation. money is not really a big factor and it would be worth it to know that someone actually looked through my packet, did the job right and submitted the rec on time. i would also pay extra for a sorority alumni to write an extra letter of support to the chapter for me.

The tackiest and greediest thing I've ever seen. You shouldn't make someone pay for a rec. Learn to say no if you don't want to do it.
