would you pay for recs?
by: Lily
Hi I'm an alumna of a sorority with a large national footprint and I usually write about 20-30 letters of recommendation each year, including Alabama. It seems however that there's a much stronger emphasis on recs lately, or maybe much higher recruitment numbers, as I am being bombarded left and right with requests for letters of recommendation, many from girls I don't even know! (someone must have passed my info along as a person to reach out to)
Anyway, I'm getting pretty burnt out from meeting up for coffee, reading resumes and writing recs over and over and over again so I thought maybe I should start charging for letters. Especially if I don't know the girl and have to interview her and work from scratch.
The big question is how much should I charge? Let's assume there's a market for this, as demand is very high and many girls seem desperate for recs. I figure if people don't want to pay it will at least lessen the number of letters I have to write.
So PNMs, would you pay $10 for a good recommendation? $25? How about $100 for a rec? Actives, think about how much recs were worth to you when you were going through recruitment. How much would you pay? I hope this doesn't offend anyone, as it is an honest question.

On the contrary I think a market based solution such as this will result in higher quality letters and PNMs. We all know that alumnae write letters for girls they hardly know, it happens all the time. By charging for letters sororities would get actual letters for girls that alums personally know, or they will be very high quality letters because alums will take the time to get to know the girl and give them their money's worth in a recommendation. It's a win win situation.

My mom is an alumna and she writes between 3-6 per year. I have written 2 for girls from my high school that have gone to other schools. I don’t know how your name has been passed around to get 30 plus unless you are the president of your local alumni chapter. Anyway, there is the ability to say no personally after a certain number and forward the PNM contact to your fellow sisters. Charging for a rec is just tacky. Your time is valuable. I get that. But, writing a rec for a girl you want to help is a privilege.

charging a fee for rifs is a ridiculous idea but it's actually pretty common for members of a local alumnae panhellenic or chapter to get 50+ requests esp in places like dallas or kc. i can also see contacts spreading over social media like, "email abc person, say you know xyz and they suggested you get in touch with them"

I think most alums feel obligated to submit a rif when asked. Saying no could give them a bad name in their network and put their good standing in question with their sorority. Honestly, did anyone tell you no when you asked for a rif? I'm guessing not.
