by: oosdo you guys ever wonder what it would be like to go to a school where all of this greek life and football isn't the main priority? Like maybe focusing on the bigger picture and making a difference. ugh, idk i feel like coming to college here was a mistake. just wondering if its a common thing

Honestly no.
Toured other schools and clearly and consciously made the decision to go to a big "Greek and football" school.
Because it offers what you note as "make a difference" options as well as. If you choose to ignore those things at Bama that your choice.
I agree, sometimes it's hard to stay focused and be the disciplined one in a Greek environment where at times it seems everyone else is always going out. But, it's also easy to find those that aren't. And, I prefer to have the choice rather than being captive in a smaller pond.

tbh i sometimes wonder what it would be like at a different school. mostly i feel that way when i see on social media what's going on at other schools where football and the greek scene aren't the center of everyone's lives. like there really aren't very many hipsters (i mean real actual hipsters) here. we have a very "normy" student body.

The grass is always greener! Don’t you think the guys stressed out at Harvard dream of going to a school like Alabama where partying and football rule? Of course they do, at times. If you are having a hard time having fun here, it’s you, not the 30,000 of the rest of us. It’s your personality or a chip on your shoulder. Get over it and make an effort to find and do something you enjoy with people who like the same thing.

Honestly, i would smack a Harvard student across the head if they wasted energy believing that this is a better school solely because of the social aspect. I would think they’d consider top tier schools that do still have a very active social life over this school. Not trying to be a snob because I obviously go here, but if I could get into Harvard I wouldn’t even consider a school like this.

Not so sure. My brother graduated from a very small college in Alabama with grades that were nothing special and now has a very top position with a major tv network. Yes he gained the skills over the years, but he told me plenty of people have the skills and he believed he rose so far is because his most important asset is everyone likes him. He has huge social skills. Believe it or not, Bama offers unique social opportunities, and shockingly, swaps are actually valuable down the road. Where else do you get week in and week out practice of walk into a room filled with some you may know and lots you don't know where the main purpose of the night (besides drinking) is to meet people in the frat/sorority you don't know? Sure, sometimes it turns out awesome and sometimes it turns out awful, but every time it is social practice that you will need to go far in your career. If you have good grades and great social skills, you will have a fine career and have a great time in college as well. Added bonus, great football team.

I know friends who are much more academic schools with no big sports or Greek life, and I’ve never envied them for a second. I think being at a big school like this does not mean we don’t have strong academics or opportunities to make a difference. Football gives us something fun that builds pride in the school and it pays for so much of what makes this school great. Greek life isn’t perfect, but it has connected me with with amazing organizations and opportunities and has inspired me to work to make an impact.
If you choose not to take advantage of what we have here or don’t have the self-discipline to focus on things besides football and Greek parties then sure, maybe this isn’t the right fit for you. But it also sounds like a personal issue rather than a problem with the school as a whole
