stupid questions i'm prob overthinking

by: pnm

I'm going through recruitment this fall, and it feels like there are so many unofficial rules that I can't keep up with. So example..

Do you clap after the door songs or do you just kinda stand there until they take you in the house?
Do you shake the active's hand when you meet them or just jump into conversation?
Are you supposed to bring up your accomplishments or is that precocious?
Is it okay to ask questions about the active talking to you?
Do you only wear heels on pref night?
How does everyone keep from getting super sweaty all day?

Break your shoes in before rush. And wear them for a while in the afternoons to see if they're still comfortable when your feet are larger. Def get some Dr Scholl's moleskin to put on tender spots where the shoe has rubbed.

Excellent point that feet will swell in first round and maybe second. But those should be flats and casual shoes anyway so no big deal.

The absolute worse blisters and pain I got during rush were from my flats I wore during philanthropy. Obviously most girls know not to make this dumb mistake, but DO NOT wear brand new shoes during rush because I was seriously regretting it hahaha

When people say "bring a fan," do you mean a fold out fan or like one of those electric ones (like the ones at Disney lol)

Small battery operated ones. Don’t wait until you get to Tuscaloosa- Target and all the other stores will be out of them. Watch out for your hair. I cannot tell you how much hair I lost in my fan blade!

From in state so I was preparing my whole life for rush!!
1. Bring a water proof bag. Do. Or bring a Louis Vuitton tote or anything expensive. You leave your bags outside on the grass and they will get wet from the sprinklers having been on earlier in the morning. No nice bags, trust me. A lot of girls use scout bags or other types of beachy tote bags.
2. Things I had in my bag: electric fan with extra pair of batteries, snacks (ppl your meals are limited), rain jacket and umbrella, a towel you can sit on the grass on between houses if necessary (useful for pref), mirror, makeup, bandaids for blisters, blotting sheets from target, deodorant, dental flossers (just in case), comfy shoes!!!!! Y’all bring comfy walking shoes seriously. Walking to lunch, walking in the rain, walking to vote, you’ll be glad you had some comfy shoes and aren’t having to wear your nice shoes everywhere.
3. DRINK WATER. I grew up here so I thought I would be fine, but trust me, heat+nerves is a bad combo if you’re not hydrated.
4. Smile and remember the girls talking to you in houses are just as nervous as you to be talking, and they also want you to like them as much as you want them to like you!!!!!!
5. Talk to your rho chis!!!!! They’re here to help you and make this easy on you. They’re awesome and they wanted to do this.

Instead of a towel to sit on, bring something plastic or vinyl so the wetness doesn't come through. A vinyl tablecloth works great.

Watch your flats because they can give you blisters if they go around your ankle. This is where you would actually wear gym shoes if you could lots of walking

I was OOS but one of the best pieces of advice I got was to get a keratin treatment on my hair about a month before rush. I have wavy hair and frizzes instantly whether I straighten it, curl it, or leave it be and this was a godsend at keeping my hair fairly tamed through the sweat, stress and humidity. If you're worried about how your hair will react to it do one now so that it will be back to normal by rush if you hate it.

YESSSS the keratin treatment is an actual godsend!!! Girls with hair that waves (when you want it to be straight) and frizzes easily, get one it will change your life lol especially in the bama heat. I know they are super pricy at salons, so I highly recommend ordering the product online and watching tutorials and doing it yourself or with the help of a friend. It may sound daunting, but I promise its not too hard to do and the pay off (tame hair and not spending 400 dollars) is totally worth it!

Agree keratin is expensive, also agree that doing it at home yourself can be iffy- beyond being strong chemicals you also have to heat treat it very carefully. I got my keratin treatment through a groupon. If you check the reviews of the paces offering them you might be able to find a decent deal at a trustworthy place.
