stupid questions i'm prob overthinking

by: pnm

I'm going through recruitment this fall, and it feels like there are so many unofficial rules that I can't keep up with. So example..

Do you clap after the door songs or do you just kinda stand there until they take you in the house?
Do you shake the active's hand when you meet them or just jump into conversation?
Are you supposed to bring up your accomplishments or is that precocious?
Is it okay to ask questions about the active talking to you?
Do you only wear heels on pref night?
How does everyone keep from getting super sweaty all day?

1. Do what everyone else does
2. If they put out their hand, shake it. If not, it's cool.
3. Yes, bring up your accomplishments, especially if you can work it into the conversation without seeming like you are bragging.
4. Please ask questions. That's how a conversation works.
5. Most people do, but as long as you are dressed appropriately, wear what you want.
6. Coffee filters, make up, deodorant in your bag.

Good luck.

1. No, you don't need to clap, just smile.
2. You will walk in single file into the house and there will be a girl at the door to greet you. She'll probably put her hand on your back in a sort of half hug and guide you to the room you'll talk in. No handshake.
3. Learn how to self-brag without being annoying. Remember that we already know about your GPA, school awards, sports captainships, and we've probably stalked your social media/talked to people who know you so we approximately know about your lifestyle. We hear dozens of girls trying to impress us with their vacations/talking about what their daddy does/mission trips, etc. I would say it's better to find some common ground with your active and talk about that.
4. We'll match you with an active who has similar activities/background as you, so its absolutely a good thing to ask the active about herself! This goes with #3, try to find common ground and make a connection with her. You're going to need her to pull for you when it comes time to vote on/rank PNMs.
5. Pumps on Pref, wedges/more casual sandal heels on Sisterhood, sandals/flats on first 2 rounds.
6. Ditto 1st poster. Bring a hand fan too. Coffee filters are a godsend. Also bring a towel because it might rain and you might have to sit on the ground. Don't bother with a fancy bag - no one will see it and it might get wet.

Great advice thank you I’m going to be melting

I came from far OOS where we have little to no humidity. I thought I was going to die. I'm not even exaggerating. Bring anything you can think of (that fits in a bag, obviously) to make yourself feel better and cooler. Some great suggestions have already been made here, but I'd add that you'll be better off if you start looking into waterproof make up now. Also, make sure your clothes are light and airy. This isn't the time for heavy material.

The above poster who suggested drinking the water is dead on. You might hear rumors that if you drink it, houses will think less of you, but like a ton of rumors that you will hear, it's BS. DRINK the WATER. Start drinking water in the weeks before recruitment, and drink when you can.

A setting spray is very helpful to fix your face so your makeup won't melt off. Urban Decay All Nighter is a good one but there are other good ones out there too. Another good thing to have is mole skin in case your shoes start rubbing on your feet.

In reality, everyone gets really sweaty during rush, and everyone understands that other people are going to be hot and sweaty in the middle of the Alabama late summer humidity. You just have to try to keep touching up and freshening yourself. It sucks, but there is so much happening that it wasn't the most forefront thing in my head at the time.

The bigger thing to be worried about is keeping yourself hydrated!! Fainting is worse than sweating, so be sure to take care of yourself, eat throughout the day, and drink a ton of water when you can

Not the OP, but I have a follow up question.

I understand that it's going to be super hot outside, but what about in the houses? Do they have the AC cranked up? I tend to freeze in air conditioning, and I can't imagine being sweaty from the outside is gonna help that situation. I carry a sweater everywhere in the summer. Will I look ridiculous if I do it during recruitment, or am I better off dealing with goosebumps?

Well, we TRY to crank up the AC, but there are so many bodies in the house during parties and the door has to stay open for the song and to get everybody into the house and then to get everybody back out and this goes on so many times during the day, that it is hard to keep the house cool. No way will you get chilled. There is nothing like the Deep South in August. Nothing.

Thank you! I will stick a light sweater in my bag, but won't worry about bringing it in, unless I find I need it. I hadn't thought about all the people and the door open!

Jacket? You will NOT need a jacket. A disposable rain poncho from the dollar store would be better. Bring several.

Trust me, that blast of AC is the only time you will be remotely comfortable at any point during the day. It’s still warm in the houses because there are 200+ people in a pretty condensed area so the body heat is a big factor.
I can assure you you will NOT be needing a jacket in the houses lol we will think you are totally crazy
