gpa
by: pnmhow much does gpa matter during rush??? Does it depend on who you are... etc???
#1by: Yes
Yes, it matters. A low GPA (under 3.0) will get you cut from most houses, an average GPA (3.2-3.5) will get you put onto a watch list through recruitment. A high GPA (3.8 +) will get you noticed. Unless you are an Alabama legacy and your momma gives $$$$$ to that chapter every year, you had some medical issue in your family, or you have a learning disability that went undiagnosed for most of your life, a low GPA will still get you cut. Most houses have averages of 3.4 or above. Honestly, if you are more than .2 below that average, you better be pretty stellar in all other aspects. We protect our grades.
#2by: Not quite
3.2 and below is not great but after 3.3/3.4 you have passed the gpa cutoff. Possibly AXO might still drop you for a 3.4 but there are a lot of 4.0 32 ACT girls that get dropped from many of those same houses. Below a 3.2 is rough, below a 3.0 is what the above said unless you have all the things above just wait a year to rush.
#3by: Grades
You have to have them but after that they don’t help you at all. Yes below a 3.2 is not great and that could easily be an automatic cut for some houses. But having a 4.2 means nothing if you do not click with someone during rush. Grades are cut by the person handling that portion it’s a basic cut. You will only get past that if you are someone they really want and each round it’s up for discussion. If you pass the house threshold gpa than you’ve passed grades. The hard part is getting the votes everyday and that is where the 4.2 and high gpas get confused. Gpa gets you past the grade threshold but it takes a lot more than that so it’s a combination. Without grades it’s a mess, doesn’t matter how cute etc you are scholarship is not budging you will not be spared the grade cut. Basically you have to get past the grade cut and then it’s about many other things and you need to get the votes. So yes you need a B+ gpa but it’s a lot more about connection and fit after that

#6by: GPA .
High GPA will likely get you through the first round at most houses. Low GPA will likely get you dropped.
After that, high GPA is meaningless.
This is confusing to pnm not familiar with rush and wonder how they were let go with a top GPA. Here it is connections, connections, connections. They will pull you all the way through even with low grades and without them, no GPA, no matter how high will help you. You have to have someone pulling for you from the inside, at every round, and willing to put their word on the line for you. This is tough for OOS who come in unknown and have very little time to make an impression. Even with recs and a top GPA you will likely face deep cuts. Don't worry there are a handful of houses that will give you a chance and take a risk on you.
We lose out on great girls this way but we also don't take the risk of bringing in the wrong girls for our house. Houses that take the chance are frequently rewarded with amazing sisters but also occasionally end up with messes. Those great unknown pnm going to houses who take the chance on them is one reason all of our houses are so strong.

Do they take course rigor into consideration? I have about a B average, but I took primarily honors and AP courses at a pretty rigorous high school. I'm from a northern OOS and even though I went to public school, my high school was consistently ranked amoung the top ten in the state.

I had a 2.1 and still managed to pull 3 houses after IWT and philanthropy. I had a pretty impressive resume though because i was super involved in high school, i just had a hard time with schoolwork due to family issues. If you have a low High school GPA, i would recommend you wait to rush till sophomore year. I have a 4.0 now but im stuck in a house that barely can make grade cuts.

There is no “watch list” you either have grades or you don’t. It is only a “grade risk” that is still being kept by a house during rush that you evaluate each round if the house wants to keep her for the next round. If you have below a 3.0 than you’re pretty much a grade risk each round for most houses if you haven’t been cut yet. Some 3.0 and below will get some houses you wouldn’t expect but those are super legacies or something special and that pnm will still have a 2.9. Those are one in a million so be prepared for cuts.
