Yes, it matters. A low GPA (under 3.0) will get you cut from most houses, an average GPA (3.2-3.5) will get you put onto a watch list through recruitment. A high GPA (3.8 +) will get you noticed. Unless you are an Alabama legacy and your momma gives $$$$$ to that chapter every year, you had some medical issue in your family, or you have a learning disability that went undiagnosed for most of your life, a low GPA will still get you cut. Most houses have averages of 3.4 or above. Honestly, if you are more than .2 below that average, you better be pretty stellar in all other aspects. We protect our grades.

There is no “watch list” you either have grades or you don’t. It is only a “grade risk” that is still being kept by a house during rush that you evaluate each round if the house wants to keep her for the next round. If you have below a 3.0 than you’re pretty much a grade risk each round for most houses if you haven’t been cut yet. Some 3.0 and below will get some houses you wouldn’t expect but those are super legacies or something special and that pnm will still have a 2.9. Those are one in a million so be prepared for cuts.

But a 3.0 is not a great gpa. AGD will drop anyone below a 3.3 and AXO states a 3.0 but that is pretty much there for a special pnm exception. They like a high gpa 3.5 is probably a watch for them but there are 2,000 pnms going through rush so it’s not like you’ve got all night to evaluate gpas to the tenth. The magic number seems to be 3.2 to a 3.3. After a 3.3 is pretty much fine. If a house really likes you they really like you. Gpa is to keep scholarship up and it’s the easiest cut to make with that many pnms rushing. Everyone tries and round up their gpa that is why 3.4 is easier to say because a 3.29 is not a 3.3. If you have a legitimate 3.3 to 3.4 you should make it past grades which is just a basic cut.

My house does have a watch list. That’s why I said it. If we don’t know a girl but she has an ok GPA, ok presentation, and ok involvements (either on recs, Panhellenic application, or through conversation), she’s on a watch list. She can be pulled at anytime of another member thinks she’s strange or a risk or be moved to a tops if she really clicks with a bump. Other houses may rank girls differently, but we weed out through grades and personality equally.

You have a watch list for girls with a 3.5 all the way through rush? We don’t have access to the pnms grades or transcripts that private info is handled by a select few in rush in our house. I could see a select few on the bubble and yes we love pnms with high grades but a 3.5 that is clicking with the girls is great. Now that I wrote that I realize you said they would go to the top if everyone liked them. So I’m thinking gpa is helpful if you are having a hard time deciding. Our house does a great job of having the private info handled by very few,who do verify it, but lists and places on lists are very private as that is unnecessary info for everyone.

First time commenting on this thread, but surely you know that different houses do membership selection differently.... Some are more public and some are not. There are pros and cons of each. Of course our methods are different - it’s like there are different unique sororities here or something.

For what it’s worth to the OP, for my house, once you clear the cut for grades which is around a 3.3 for about 95% of PNMs, your grades won’t matter as much later. When making our final decisions, we’re going to weigh personality and fit more than whether some girl had a 4.2 vs 3.8.

3.2 and below is not great but after 3.3/3.4 you have passed the gpa cutoff. Possibly AXO might still drop you for a 3.4 but there are a lot of 4.0 32 ACT girls that get dropped from many of those same houses. Below a 3.2 is rough, below a 3.0 is what the above said unless you have all the things above just wait a year to rush.

You have to have them but after that they don’t help you at all. Yes below a 3.2 is not great and that could easily be an automatic cut for some houses. But having a 4.2 means nothing if you do not click with someone during rush. Grades are cut by the person handling that portion it’s a basic cut. You will only get past that if you are someone they really want and each round it’s up for discussion. If you pass the house threshold gpa than you’ve passed grades. The hard part is getting the votes everyday and that is where the 4.2 and high gpas get confused. Gpa gets you past the grade threshold but it takes a lot more than that so it’s a combination. Without grades it’s a mess, doesn’t matter how cute etc you are scholarship is not budging you will not be spared the grade cut. Basically you have to get past the grade cut and then it’s about many other things and you need to get the votes. So yes you need a B+ gpa but it’s a lot more about connection and fit after that

These are good responses but know there are always exceptions if we want you bad enough. Even AXO will take a 3.0 if she has bffs in house.

Yes but it’s so much easier to just have above a 3.3/3.4.
It’s important to remember those pnm with a 3.0 going AXO are few and far between
There is a gpa though that is an absolute cut for houses nationals though so a 2.5 is never going to fly. I still think 3.0 is a really hard rush. 4 points either direction is a 3.4 or a 2.6. I think everyone gets carried away with you having to have a 4.0. Gpa would be a lot easier if they were unweighted because some people come through with 5.5 gpas and 20 ACTs and that just screams grade inflation.

Past grade cuts but even high gpa doesn’t guarantee an invite back to 2nd round everywhere. It’s an easy cut and it’s not meant to be mean it just necessary. High gpa is really worthless after that

Do they use weighted GPA?

UA uses weighted GPA, so sororities also use weighted.

High GPA will likely get you through the first round at most houses. Low GPA will likely get you dropped.
After that, high GPA is meaningless.

This is confusing to pnm not familiar with rush and wonder how they were let go with a top GPA. Here it is connections, connections, connections. They will pull you all the way through even with low grades and without them, no GPA, no matter how high will help you. You have to have someone pulling for you from the inside, at every round, and willing to put their word on the line for you. This is tough for OOS who come in unknown and have very little time to make an impression. Even with recs and a top GPA you will likely face deep cuts. Don't worry there are a handful of houses that will give you a chance and take a risk on you.

We lose out on great girls this way but we also don't take the risk of bringing in the wrong girls for our house. Houses that take the chance are frequently rewarded with amazing sisters but also occasionally end up with messes. Those great unknown pnm going to houses who take the chance on them is one reason all of our houses are so strong.

Yes this is very true. You need the grades but after you have them it’s all connections and impressions

Not meaningless.
If it's a choice between a 3.5 and a 3.8, all other things being equal, we might go with the 3.8.

Do they take course rigor into consideration? I have about a B average, but I took primarily honors and AP courses at a pretty rigorous high school. I'm from a northern OOS and even though I went to public school, my high school was consistently ranked amoung the top ten in the state.

That’s something that a good rec writer will note. They will write “Suzy PNM has taken a rigorous course load at (So and so) HS, which is ranked top ten in (insert state). She has successfully completed ( insert number) AP courses. I think she a very bright and poised young lady and she is well-prepared for college and for a sisterhood.” Can y’all see the value of a good rec?

During rush the GPA that is considered for cuts, is it your weighted GPA or unweighted?

I had a 2.1 and still managed to pull 3 houses after IWT and philanthropy. I had a pretty impressive resume though because i was super involved in high school, i just had a hard time with schoolwork due to family issues. If you have a low High school GPA, i would recommend you wait to rush till sophomore year. I have a 4.0 now but im stuck in a house that barely can make grade cuts.
