engineering and greek life

Is it true that if I join a sorority, my Engineering professors and fellow students will think less of me, and treat me like I'm an idiot? What about that I will get dropped by houses during Recruitment, simply because I'm in a difficult major?
I am OOS, but I have a male friend at UA now, who told me all this, but it seems more like Greek hate than anything else. I mean with so many girls involved, there are probably a ton of girls in "Hard" majors, I'd think.
The other part, I'm more inclined to believe, but hopefully someone here has more experience? I know Engineering skews heavily male, but surely some of those guys are in Greek life, too.

Yeah he's so off! There are so many women in my sorority that are engineering majors and they are some of the smartest people I know! Many, many sorority women are in difficult majors and a lot of organizations respect that heavily. The issue I think with guys in engineering is that they don't all have great social skills and judge others quickly but it really doesn't matter what they think.

I was told the same thing, and didn't rush my freshman year because of it. It's definitely not true. I've met so many girls in my engineering classes that are in sororities and have no problem balancing the two. As far as professors, they don't care. I wish I would've rushed!

I think being in a sorority is actually a great support system grade-wise (and socially of course), especially if your major is tough. There will be girls who have taken the same classes or are taking them with you and they can give you any advice or help you might need!
The fact that you’re in a difficult major and (from what I can tell on this post) care about succeeding in school will be something that a lot of houses will want!
Your friend is definitely wrong, and if you are interested in rushing you should absolutely do it!

I’m pretty sure I could wear a shirt with letters every single day and my professors would still have no idea I’m in a sorority. Trust me they really don’t care.
I’m not going to say there aren’t some houses at the top of the grade list that may rank you lower for being engineering, though, unless you’re obviously some sort of genius with 36 ACT or something. Some houses will do anything to maintain a top GPA
