former rho chi’s perspective

by: X

I was a rho chi the last two years and honestly I don’t think you get a good perspective of how well people do during rush until you see it from that side. It’s still not perfect because it’s only based on what I heard from my girls, but here’s what I saw
Phi mu- VERY polarizing. A lot of my girls HATED it which I was surprised by. Both years they said the house tour was flashy and it rubbed a lot of them the wrong way (I did explain to them that when I went through they did a tour of their small, old house so it’s just something they’ve always done)
Alpha Chi- by far the most popular during open house, basically every single girl wanted to be one after the first round. They lost steam after that, but their open house is second to none.
Chi O- very popular both years, they pulled more non-southern this year
Kappa- honestly not very much hype with my girls, which I was surprised by. They liked it, but very few raved about it
KD- pretty minimal buzz last year, more than one of my girls who went KD ended up dropping because they didn’t like it. This year they were very popular with my west coast girls, which I was surprised by. The girls of mine they got this year were great, so I’m happy for them.
DG- literally no one talked about them. My girls didn’t hate it, but no one went DG unless they had no better options or they didn’t get their top choice on bid day
Alpha Gam- no buzz last year, VERY popular this year. A lot of my girls preffed them
Theta- my girls HATED them. I felt bad because I know a lot of great girls who are thetas, but my girls dreaded going to their house, and this was the house girls cried about getting a bid from
DZ- the other house my girls hated. They got a couple of great girls, but only because those girls didn’t get their first choice.
Pi Phi- didn’t hear a lot about them, good or bad. They cross rushed with xo a lot on pref, so they must be doing something right
Gamma Phi- not much buzz last year, VERY popular this year. This year I had girls choose gamma phi over axo, xo, and phi mu. I was surprised by it, but good for them.
Tri delt- pretty irrelevant last year, killed it this year. My girls loved them and they got girls who were clearly top PNMs for other houses too
ADPi- nodoby hated them, but no one talked about them.
AOPi- my girls hated them last year, very apathetic this year
Zeta- attracted girls who were ~their type~ the rest of the girls were totally apathetic to them
Alpha Phi- NOT popular with my girls. The only ones who went APhi either only had them left of pref or dropped out of rush and got a COB. Never been a fan of alpha phi tbh, but rush was proof that they’re nothing like they think they are

I did rho chi twice and got similar vibes as you, but I think every group turns out differently. And girls are absolutely influenced by where the girls in their group go.

In mine, phi Mu was also very polarizing. A few absolutely loved it, most didn’t like the vibe, ALL we’re intimidated

Alpha chi did okay, but there were a couple girls in my group this who were well-informed about the Vestavia fiasco and this really affected their Birmingham pull from my group. But they were overall really liked by most girls in my group.

Tri delt was the most popular of my group! A huge number of my girls who were top PNMs went tri delt. I think this was a mixture of them pulling off a fantastic rush and a lot of the girls in my group wanting to go in together.

Chi o got a few out of state, really sweet girls from my group. As soon as they told me they were going chi o I knew they would love it!

Kd actually Cross rushed a ton with alpha chi this year. The girls from my group who went kd were OOS southern girls who were really smart and all-around good girls.

A good number fantastic in state girls went ADPi and AOPi which I was so happy about!

And honestly one of the most popular houses was gamma phi. My girls loved it all week and many wanted it from the get go!

What’s the vestavia fiasco

There definitely gets to be a group mentality. Many times girls that lack self confidence fire themselves up about middle houses so they can only be disappointed in a good way as things unfold. Most tend to keep aspiring to the AXOs, PMs, etc until they start to see the writing on the wall, then start expressing a view that they don’t like them and whatnot. Lots of this is tent talk and face saving.

Vestavia is a Birmingham suburban public school that usually has a good amount of top PNMs. They had a pretty high profile PNM go through last recruitment that got blackballed based on an older girl having a problem because of a boy thing. The PNM had a lot of other connections and was friends with all the other top OTM PNMs. That girl got dropped after second round, I think, and it was a thing that split the house and girls came out crying that night and stuff like that. The girl is killing it at another OR house now. Honestly, I doubt it had any impact on other top OTM PNMs, most of whom were heading in other directions already.

Oh... I forgot to say but it should be obvious. The blackball happened at AXO. The girl went next door.
She was a better fit at the place she ended up, anyway.

A lot also depends on the group makeup of your Rho Chi. I'm Southern OOS who had friends in other RC groups who I talked to often throughout recruitment and it seemed like the vibes were different in those tents depending on who the more popular girls in each tent were. For example, my friend's tent really loved AGD and XO but in my tent there were a few gorgeous girls who I later learned were "top PNMs" who went Phi Mu and I know a lot of other girls in my tent sort of aspired to be Phi Mu as well. I would assume that a lot of PNMs get swayed by what the supposed top girls like.

It also can be affected by the actual Rho Chi leaders without their actually meaning it. My favorite Rho Chi leader was very neutral about certain houses but was very excited for me about others. In the end, I chose a house she seemed ok with, stating that I needed to make a choice based upon what letters I would be more proud to wear. In the end, I found out that one of my houses I was unsure about but kept ranking as a 1 for the first two rounds was her house. I also ranked two other old row houses 2 and 3 after IWT that now I might have been happy in due to her neutrality. I know she tried very hard to be unbiased and really wanted the best for me, but I think leaders are only human and want a good fit for their girls, whatever THEY think that might be.

It can be really tough as a rho chi to hear a girl you like try to decide between houses when you don’t want to bias her but you also truly believe one of the houses is a much better fit.
There was only one girl I outright told her I didn’t think her top choice (alpha phi) would be a good fit for her compared to the other houses she preffed. But I also told her that I’d only known her for a week and it was really most important that she chose where SHE wanted to be.
She picked alpha phi and ended up being pretty unhappy there, it still breaks my heart because I know it was her decision to make and NOT my job to tell her what to do, but i wish I could have gotten her to chose differently.

Totally agree. I was also a Rho Chi and like 99% of the girls in my group were drawn to chapters that weren't mine, and weren't anything like mine, but I knew they weren't the right fit for my chapter and vice versa. I'd much rather my PNMs be happy in a house other than mine than be miserable in my house and drop. And it definitely sucks when a PNM ends up dropping her house, because you wonder if you could have done something differently to help her find a better fit.

But yeah, each Rho Chi group is VERY different, so while I think hearing what everyone's PNMs thought is fun, we all need to take it with a grain of salt. There are thousands of PNMs divided amongst these groups, so just listening to what one group thinks won't give an accurate picture of the entire PNM pool.

That is so odd! My girls tended to love ZTA, APhi, and Pi Phi. Of course, Phi Mu and AXO dominated, as did KD and Chi O. GPhi was well-like too.
