how far can grades get you?

Not really. There are 300-400 girls with grades better than that.
Having those grades PLUS being pleasant, easy to talk to, and well-put-together (appearance) will get you far. Notice that I did not say beautiful. Be well groomed, tastefully and appropriately dressed.

GPA is more of a check box. As long as your GPA ranges from "below average" to "why aren't you at Harvard with a full ride", it checks off as adequate for every house.
Only red flags are if your gpa is quite a bit below average.
So, no a high gpa won't help you any more than an average gpa or a bit below average gpa.

I know that Theta has a reputation for having top grades, but I'm not sure why. When you look at the grade reports, the top grades are almost always 1) AXO, 2) XO, 3) AGD, 4) DDD and ADPi . On an overall consistent basis, Theta is a distant 6th at best. It seems like AGD, DDD and ADPi don't get enough credit for their consistently high grades.

COMPLETELY agree with “@uh”s post . I’m in state and came in with a 33 ACT and 4.2 GPA. Really thought I would clique with AXO or XO because of my grades/involvement, but there’s a personally aspect to both of these houses along with high grades. I would describe both alpha chi and chi o as attracting competitive, type A girls.
Even though I came in kind of fitting the mold of alpha chi or chi o, I am much more laid back and was kind of turned off by both houses (don’t get me wrong— love both houses and they are great! Just wasn’t right fit for me). Ended up in a more relaxed OR house that has less of a focus on competition, and couldn’t be happier.
Just goes to show that you can be very smart/academic focused and fit in a house that doesn’t stereotypically recruit “the smart girls”!

What DD said is spot on.
I pledged a house that doesn’t have the “smart girl” reputation and at first I really questioned my choice. I quickly realized there are smart girls in every house and found girls in my chapter that really valued academics and liked to have fun!
Even though there are a lot of generalizations about chapters, a girl that’s the opposite of a house rep can fit in perfectly, and a girl who “fits the mold” can feel completely out of place. It’s more about your attitude
Hope this helps :)

If you don’t have a rec you’re getting dropped after ice water unless someone really likes you and wants to find you a rec letter. Also, I’m in charge of recs for my sorority and the lists of girls coming through (big spreadsheet) and I’ll definitely super super highlight someone with that gpa and act. But that’s about how much it’ll make you stand out. Gotta be able to hold a convo and be someone’s rush crush

Ditto. My stats were above the OP and I had every other box checked. Good looks, social skills, right activities and recs. No Alabama connections from far OOS. Had great convos in houses but didn't make it to final rounds in any of the typically mentioned houses. No matter. I am happy in my house but the reality is most of what is on here is just bs. Just know going in there is a strong anti OOS bias and while some make it through, thousands will not and will find a lower ranked house. Hard to believe so many are ranked so low with such high quality sisters. Ranks here are IS. Propaganda
