Its something to do with it being after a vowel, or because phi sounds more feminine. there are a few reasons ive been told

I heard it's because it comes after an Alpha, so it's Fee, but then again there's a black fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha that pronounces it "fie" so idk. The thing is none of these greek organizations are actually greek or were founded by Greek people or with any real understanding of ancient Greece outside the Classics department at their given universities, so I think the Greek letter designation is perhaps less important than what they WANT it to mean, if that makes sense. Like there are some "greek" organizations at Christian universities in Texas that are literally just gibberish, like "ko jo kai".

I googled it. Fee is actual Greek pronunciation. Fie is the anglicized version. Apparently the founders thought Fee sounded more feminine than fie.

Straight from an Alpha Phi: The pronunciation wasn't standardized until something like the 1930s or 1940s. The national org at that time thought they were pronouncing it according to the "real" way that Greek would have been pronounced. It had nothing to do with a more feminine sound.
