new sorority (not sk)

by: Hmm

Apparently kappa beta gamma, a non NPC sorority, is on campus trying to establish a colony right now. My friend got an email about it and a sister was approached by them at the Ferg. Has anyone heard anything about this? All I know about them is that several of their larger chapters have disaffiliated from their nationals and become NPC chapters. Kinda seems like a red flag org.

is this a black sorority?

by: BR

Nope. Just a regular sorority not affiliated with Panhellenic. Looked them up on google and it looks like two of their chapters have recently been taken over by kappa and KD at other schools

They're a small non-NPC social sorority with Catholic roots, although they're not religiously affiliated now. Most of their chapters are at small schools with even smaller Greek systems.

In addition to the chapters that decided to affiliate with Kappa and KD, they have a chapter at Wake Forest that used to be a chapter of Pi Phi until they got shut down for hazing and partying.

When KKG took over the KBG chapter they were shady in many respects toward the KBG Nationals, but that's water under the bridge unless an NPC group here is looking to merge into KBG in a similar shady manner.

Can they do that without permission from the school?

Yes. Fraternities do it all the time. The multi-step extension process that was used to bring DG, APhi etc is mandated by NPC, not by the school.

TBH it'll probably end up being the girls for whom even SDT, ADX, and the engineering sorority are a long shot.

If thats a long shot for you, you need help

They've literally poached girls from both of those sororities, maybe they'll be better

ADX and AOE they might be able to surpass, but SDT is a national panhellenic organization with a house and I just don’t see it happening. SDT has panhellenic support wheras KBG will never in a million years see that support.

No one cares about them. They'll take the ones even SDT won't take

I’m sorry for the girls who got tricked into colonizing an independent sorority. Should have waited for SK or joined SDT.

They're still a national organization with 20+ chapters, not a local. Apparently they've been trying to build up enough of a presence to petition to successfully join the NPC, so we'll see.

Yeah that will work well since their colonies close within a couple of years. Just look at their chapter history on their website. It's tragic and hilarious.

They could still pledge an NPC group.

You have to have a minimum number of chapters to petition to join the NPC...I believe it's 50. They have a ways to go.

Maybe if the whole Panhellenic community came together and actually supported each other... including supporting SDT, then sororities like KBG wouldn't be able to poach girls.

Instead, all y'all do is tear each other down.

They’re not “independent” they’re UGC which is a different council that hosts special interest sororities and fraternities. Joining them is not the same experience as Panhellenic but it’s not a “bad” one or a second choice. Just different

I’m gonna have to disagree with you there

It’s UGC at Alabama, because that’s where all the independent organizations go. Nationally they have no umbrella org.

You are a non-Greek troll. You can try and try to fake it but it's too obvious. Only a troll would say that, in just that way.

I'm sure their national does the best it can without a lot of money and alumnae support, but it doesn't look good that they have a number of dormant chapters that opened after 2000 but stayed open only five or six years.

Yeah they don't seem very stable or legit.

their website also looks really poorly made. Like a chapter's Wix site, not the website for a national organization. I think Alabama is too big of a school with too specific of a greek presence to try to colonize a chapter like this without serious support.

It's so typical of the NPC sororities to bash another sorority trying to establish themselves on campus. So KBG is not a very large sorority and not part of the umbrella NPC Org., but we are an independent International Sorority with many sisters across the Country and in Canada. For KBG to be colonizing at a large Greek Campus such as Bama (BTW we also have Kentucky doing very well and future expansion sites at Indiana, Michigan, Mizzou & Ohio State), obviously their are girls across the Country starting to take notice of our sorority. I wonder if they (NPC) will do the same bashing to Sigma Kappa once they begin their colonization in the Fall.

Haha so y'all's plan is to pick up the rejects at big schools then watch those chapters wither and crash and burn like they have at every other school you start at. Stop embarrassing yourselves on here.

so is this post from someone apparently affiliated with their nationals/colonization process supposed to compel PNMs to join them? Because all it tells me is that they have representatives of their sorority openly trolling GreekRank to talk about their chapter. Not a good look.

And I think the concerns people pose here are valid. Alabama is known for its strong Greek life, with big houses and huge alum presence, and KBG doesn't offer that, especially with a lackluster website and frequent chapter overturn. It's also a red flag that their (your?) chapter at WF essentially absorbed Pi Phi who were, if I recall correctly, shut down for hazing and excessive drinking, and their reputation doesn't seem to have changed. That's the concern with an uninvolved/unsupportive national body - if there isn't active and sustained involvement, there can be hazing. I would be more supportive of KBG if I saw the national organization addressing these issues and supporting the chapters they already have, instead of letting them get shut down left and right, only to pop up at a new campus. Maybe come on as a panhel-affiliate to alleviate the hazing concern, too.

Also y'all aren't picking schools in Canada with big Greek life to colonize. It's easy to colonize at schools like the University of Lethbridge where there's basically no Greek life (and no NPCs) compared to UBC which has Greek life that's comparable to a US school.

I just don't see them finding a fit here. Bama has had niche groups such as locals and multicultural sororities in the past, and none of them lasted for more than a few years at the most. The majority of women who are interested in Greek life just aren't looking for that kind of experience.

ADX has survived because they offer a faith-based experience (although some of their recent conduct sort of undercuts that), and SDT offers a smaller-scale NPC alternative for girls who weren't interested in doing formal, didn't have connections, etc., but they're the exceptions.

A similar situation on the fraternity side: a few years ago, a small, mostly unknown (outside the South) frat called Phi Mu Delta colonized but then pulled out before they were installed because they knew it was going to be an uphill battle for them to succeed.
