Was in the same position as you my freshman year (3 years ago so not sure how accurate this still may be). Expect to be dropped by all old row houses, and be happy with the few new row houses you will be left with (assuming you have GREAT conversational skills, recs, etc). Do not go into rush with high expectations. Honestly, I wish I waited until my sophomore year to rush, only because I feel I did not end up in the house that was best for me. I wanted to be in a sorority so badly, and settled for whatever house would take me being that I was a grade risk. My best advice is to raise your GPA and rush your sophomore year.

'Placing' you would be a useless and unnecessary waste of time to do so at this juncture. We have never met one another.
However, may I offer one piece of advice to your benefit: while I won't ascribe your poor GPA to too much HS involvement, perhaps you might drop a few of the many groups/sports you are currently active in and concentrate on better study habits toward the reward of a higher GPA number.

by: 3.5 is fine
If you have a 3.5, can carry a good to great conversation, can dress and groom yourself well, you will do fine. We had girls with 2.7's coming through from private HS's. They were great girls with great resumes (other than the GPA issues). A few were even legacies. But, we had no valid reason explaining the low GPA. We had to cut them and it broke our hearts. Anything below a 3.0 is too much of a risk for us and for a majority of the other houses here.

Given your unfortunate and unusual circumstances, I would go through recruitment next year. Remember, if a house can't make exceptions for your tragic loss, you likely wouldn't want them anyway. You'll miss out on too much freshman year. Move forward, explain yourself and your situation, and be grateful for the house(s) that look beyond minimum GPA cutoffs.
