It's the same way at other schools. I transferred from a small school. Each sorority had about 100 members, each frat had about 30.
Basically, sororities operate in a very regulated environment - the frats have NOTHING resembling our formal recruitment, so everything is about who you know, which limits the amount of men who are able to participate in the system. Meanwhile you can come to Alabama with no connections and a decent amount of recs and still end up in a sorority if your grades are good enough. It's more inclusive. Also, the # of sororities allowed on a campus is strictly regulated whereas frats tend to come and go. The lack of consistency means there are more frat chapters but they're all smaller in size.
