does it actually matter what one wears to class

by: .

I watched that drop out APhi's YouTube video where she talks about how people are expected to act and dress a certain way. Does it actually matter what you wear to class? Do I have to wear Norts and a tshirt or can I dress up a bit if I feel like it? I mean, I don't care if people think it's weird but will my sorority actually tell me what to and what not to wear?

"Drop out Aphi's youtube". Lol I can't even read past your judgemental tone in those words to read your actual comment. I'm not even sure what the girl's name was, because I don't watch YouTube videos much, but I'm pretty sure she transferred to another school. I could very easily be wrong, but geez. Plus I'm pretty sure someone just asked the same question recently

She dropped out of Bama and she was an Aphi...those are both facts so don’t get pissy when someone puts down the damn truth

I think it kinda varies by house. But tbh most girls do it because its easy and comfortable and I never feel like putting together an outfit for a two hour lecture ya feel

Clothes, hair, makeup. Choose two to look "nice" and you can be whatever with the 3rd. Most of the times, you WANT to go to class in baggy cotton shirts. It's comfortable and socially acceptable, so why not? Plus, wearing your sorority shirt is like advertising your sorority, and lots of girls here are proud of their sorority and want to show off their tribe. Shorts/skirts/jeans/leggings are more flexible, but running shorts and leggings are the most comfortable so they're the most commonly worn.

During swaps and game days there is plenty of opportunity to dress up and look nice and you will have the time to do put an outfit together, don't worry.

You go to college to get away from your parents telling you what to do. Why would you join a house that tells you what you can and can’t wear to class? And that requires hair and makeup to be done for an 8 a.m. math class?

That’s not sisterhood. That’s a dictatorship.

My mom always brags that they weren't even allowed to wear their letters (not at UA, but another SEC school) if they didn't have full hair and make up. She also points out that they would have never worn athletic shorts outside of a gym.

I keep telling her that it isn't really anything to brag about, but she clutches her pearls more about that than anything else in Greek life. My dad just always wonders out loud how many of those athletic shorts actually see the inside of a gym.

Honestly, I do wear the sorority "Uniform," but it isn't because my house makes me, so much as it's comfortable, and easy. If I feel like wearing something different, I do, and no one has ever said a word to me about it.

It depends on your personal style. I’m in an old row house and I’m from far OOS. Most girls wear tennis shoes, Nike shorts or tennis skirts when it’s warm, leggings when it’s cold and oversized t’s or sweatshirts that cover your butts going to class. Some girls do their hair and makeup, some don’t ( we don’t have a 2/3 or 3/4 rule). This past semester I had to work off campus for part of my classes. I had to dress casual/ professional. At first, some girls noticed my change in dress and asked about it. But, no one made me feel weird about it. Some girls in my house always dress stylish. Some girls in my house dress super laid back. But, no one tells you that dressing up is bad. The only thing that is frowned upon is body parts hanging out inappropriately for class or work. Night time/ party/ club wear is different. My house also does check your social media to make sure you are posting appropriate stuff. Our only rule is no selfies- a single shot of you needs to be taken by someone else and no bathroom mirror pics. TBH, it does look better and it is less cheesy. Most girls have finstas or Snapchat to post personality pics. Everything else should represent you and your house well and I have never felt it was overbearing.

You can’t post a selfie? Wtf? I understand an entire feed is annoying but one every once in a while is different

Matter?

Recruitment happens before anyone sees what you wear to class, so on that level it doesn't matter as no one is going to make selection decisions based on what they've see you wear to class

What you wear to class has more to do with you major and what's consistent with other kids in your classes both in your house, Greek and GDI.

Science and business classes a different vibe than performing arts , design and fashion or broadcast journalism.

Some houses may have girls predominantly in some majors and
a trend in a look results when headed to class But it's not because the house sets rules or anything like that.

That being said, when you add recruitment clothes and going out and the overall importance to clothes and looks some houses do stand out.

In general the more social houses - PhiMu, KD, ZTA, Aphi and Kappa - each with slightly different brands and looks - do seem to focus more on clothes. It comes across less in classes (at least amongst similar majors) and more in other places.

Phi Mu, Kappa a bit more conservative - Nordstom. "Southern" botiques and J Crew, While KD, ZTA and APhi a continuum of more trendy and mixed styles like Free People, Urban Outfitters, Lulu, etc. \n\n\n\n\n
