southern definition of "wealthy?"

by: curious

A lot of posts say that it helps a pnm's chances if she is wealthy. But, just based on statistics, Alabama is one of the least wealthiest states, and has the fifth worst economy out of the 50 states. So if I'm from a northern, upper-middle class family with a ~$100,000 income, does that qualify as southern "wealth?" Genuinely curious, not trying to bag on Bama or troll. It just always confuses me when a post says that a pnm isn't considered "top" because they aren't from certain wealthy areas of Alabama, but could potentially be from an area in a different state that probably has a better average income than AL.

$100,000 income isn't wealthy. $200,000 really isn't either. Once you get into the $300-$400,000 range you're well off.

If you have to ask your parents “are we wealthy?” you’re not that wealthy.

$100,000 isn’t even close to what would be considered wealthy in the south. It’s like y’all think we live under rocks.

And to answer your question about top PNMs, in short it’s not because they’re guaranteed to be wealthy. It’s because with mountain brook or mobile, or even Atlanta, we know what we’re getting. She’ll stay all 4 years and she’ll stay somewhere close after graduation and give us lots of money. That girl from NY or Connecticut may be wealthier but the odds of all the other things are much lower.

It’s unfortunate for girls who come from far OOS who plan to stay and might actually donate money post grad, but we can’t predict that beforehand.

It's not just about sheer wealth - it's about tradition, class, breeding, sophistication, elegance, taste. Showy new money just isn't our style.

It's not just about your parent's income. It's about your family and their past too. New money is not as valued as a girl from a modest income who's family still owns their old plantation in the country and they spend their money on that.

That’s disgusting. Great granddaughters of slave owners get preference at Alabama? Lol

There are people here that have grown up with a lot of family money. There are people here that are on scholarship. Both are valued in Greek life. All that matters in most cases is can you afford the dues. That goes for even the old row sororities.

Southern wealth is essentially small town wealth to anyone on the coasts. Like if your parents own a moderately successful used car dealership in a town of 15k people you’ll probability be considered “southern wealthy”

Lol not even close. Keep in mind that lots of people who currently live in the south have also lived in many other parts of the country— jobs bring lots of families to places like Atlanta and Birmingham from NY, Chicago, etc. That idea of wealth doesn’t change upon arrival.

Ok, so somebody mentioned law partners as southern wealthy so lets compare partner pay in NYC vs Birmingham. Top NYC firm is Wachtell- pay per partner is about 5million, Top Birmingham firm is Bradley- partner pay is about 500k. People don't move to the South for $ they move for QOL, but what's considered wealthy in Alabama is different than wealthy in CT/NY/NJ

We both agree that the OP's 100k wouldn't be considered southern wealthy. I was just trying to show that the Birmingham partner's 500k would be more in line of what somebody from a smaller town in the Northeast would consider wealthy than somebody from one of the larger cities. I also brought up QOL because the Birmingham partner works a hell of a lot less than the NYC one with a lower COL

Yikes okay this isn't what I was trying to antagonize with my post. I don't think that I'm some elite, prestigious b-tch that's better than "country bumpkins" because I'm from the north. I guess I should have stated the question more like "would someone with x income be financially average/stable compared to the rest of people at Bama." Most of what I know about AL's economy is what I've read in Econ class, which just gives me stats about GDP and what else, but clearly since UA has thousands of students from different areas, it acts as a type of outlier. I also picked the number $100,000 for my post because that's about the median income for my area, and just wanted to know how that compares. Didn't mean to cause such debate.

OP if you're wealthy in your home area then you'll be considered wealthy here and vise versa. But back to law firms, law firms have billable hour requirements and the NYC ones usually have significantly higher minimums than the Birmingham ones (Birmingham partners still work hard and more than a 9-5 though).Profits per partner are also public info for top firms and are a criteria of how they're ranked. Its like knowing how much profit google made last year but law firms are owned by a known number of equity partners so its not hard to publish profits per partner

My parents are wealthy, as in the money my dad earns each year ... we don't go on nice vacations every chance we get because it does not work for who we are as people (we have a family of 6, so logistics don't always work out). Sure, he pays for my education and all the supplies I'd need, but I buy my own alcohol, go out with money I earned working throughout high school etc (basically they taught me to work hard for what I want.)

People who know me would never think my parents are THAT rich, because I don't flaunt it and it is not my money to brag about, it's my parents.

Money is not everything.

I qualify as "wealthy" by Alabama standards but I have two special needs siblings and the cost of caring for them means that I don't live the same "lifestyle" as some of the girls here. My parents pay for my tuition and my dues but i cover everything else through working part-time. Money doesn't define me or my friendships. PNMs shouldn't be stressing about this so early.
