the appeal of old row

by: question!

hi. i would like to know what the appeal of old row is. what makes it automatically better than new row? if you're a part of an old row sorority/fraternity can you please explain why it's better than new row? what aspects and characteristics make it the better choice?

I don’t think it’s better, but it is more prestigious for some. It’s a harder bid to get in general.

It’s harder to get a bid and more prestigious. Wearing an old row shirt is basically walking around being labeled top teir

It's a different world, brother.

This is the University of Alabama. Old row gets top billing because it's where the kids from Alabama go.

So there is an effective ranking of who get more "points" when considering top houses - something g like this

1. Rich connected Alabama kids
2. Alabama kids with good grades and reputations
3. Other Deep South kids that are wealthy, good grades, put together, etc
4. All others from Alabama - bad reps, bad grades, etc.
5. Rich, smart and/or social non southern kids
6. Other decent southern non Alabama kids
7. All others who are decent kids non southern
8. Grade risks and social media stars.

Old row is considered best because it gets the most kids from the top "point getters", items 1,2,
3 and 4.

Point is there are plenty of great people in other houses - new row, low ranked etc. but this is how rankings are made.

It does not exist. but if there was a house created from non-southern OOS girls that had attractive girls on scholarships from zip codes in CA, CO, IL and NY with high incomes, it would never rank better than lower mid!

Old row is important ONLY to people who plan to never venture out of Alabama. OR houses give bids to girls who are socially connected in this state or maybe neighboring states. If you come from the outside world or think you might like to live in the outside world someday, OR is the worst. The sororities are mainly ones that are weaker nationally. The girls are very cliquish because they've known each other's families for several generations and they're not looking for new friends. Their first priority is Alabama debutantes and people who live in MB and Vestavia. The OR guys they mix with are (sorry to say this) kind of inbred and not the smartest, fittest, most fun guys you could meet. All in all, if you have anything going for you, looking only at OR is a mistake. Of course, if you fall in love with a house and they want you, too, go for it. But if you're shopping for prestige, know that OR prestige is only for Alabama.

Um I actually graduated 2 years ago and went to work in LA. I'm from a Southern state neighboring Alabama and am a proud member of an old row house. I joined that house because I was a 7x legacy and knew from the time I was a baby that I would be in that house. I know how the outside girls felt but didn't care that much because I had my circle of friends. I was a little shocked when I got to California to find that my sorority was considered low tier nationally. So I'm just trying to give some advice. If you're a mom still on this board I agree you should go find something better to do. I'm just trying to help out of state girls realize the actual difference between old row and new row.

You aren’t Greek because you couldn’t be a 7x legacy. Also, no one is involved in Greek life when they leave school.

Have you never heard of alumnae chapters...? "Not 4 years, for life" can be legit if you want it to be. If you only care about 4 years you're honestly really short sighted, you're at college to prepare for the future

Both grandmothers, mom, stepmom, and 3 sisters could create a 7 time legacy. It's not that hard to be

Thank you for this thread! I do not plan on staying in Alabama after college (it would be useless for my major) and this is refreshing to know!

Then don't worry about which row you're choosing. Houses like Pi Phi, G Phi, A Phi, and Theta are absolute top houses nationally. Anywhere you go there will be alumna groups of top-notch ladies. AGD, AXO, Phi Mu, etc are not tops except here. So it's short sighted to think you have to be old row if you're not staying here.

Your comment is helpful. I thought I needed to be OR to have connections but since I don't want to stay in Alabama, it's nice to know I have lots of options.

Here's the bottom line. Old Row only matters for people who are in state and plan on staying in Alabama for the most part. In college, Old Row only matters for freshmen and sophomores. Come junior year, no one cares. And if they do they're try hards. You're in college for school, fun, and to find out who you are. In the grand scheme of things, no one cares if you're Old Row or New Row. Hell people don't really care if you're greek or not
