how top/middle girls slip though
by: bamaAs an active in a middle tier house this is just something I have observed- Ive noticed a few girls in theta and dz who my house really liked during rush. We kept them all the way up till pref day and ranked them low at that point figuring that they would pref a top tier house. They all were super pretty, cool, or a legacy at a top tier house but looking back on it had something that must have turned off the top houses (grades, looks, etc.) Its sad because there was one girl in particular i had sisterhood and pref that told me she loved the house but our rush head wouldn't let us rank her higher because we thought she would go elsewhere. I just wanted to say theta and dz yall got some really cool/sweet/fun girls this year so have fun!

This is obviously written by one of those cool sweet fun girls in Theta or DZ because honestly anyone who has been through recruitment on the other side knows that you rank girls by how much you want them. If you think they might go somewhere else, no sweat. Your house will just move down to the next girl on the list. No house would ever rank a cool sweet fun girl THAT THEY WANT low on the list just because they think she might go to a better house because THAT ISN'T ANYTHING TO WORRY ABOUT.

Lol you're really not understanding how rush works. If the girl from mobile really likes your house and picks you over a top house, you'll get her if she's higher on your list. If she doesn't pick you but she's lower than the cut off for a top house list, you will still get her. If she's low on your list because you think she'll pick a top house, she might end up with her third choice. It's like purposely missing out on a great new member just because of area codes. Your house is shooting itself in the foot if they actually do that.

Just because someone may go somewhere else doesnt mean you should put them low on the list? Put them high and then if/when they join a diff org you'd go to the next girl on the list (that would have been on your list anyway if you ranked the mt brook girl lower). You'd end up with about the same pledge class but with a couple of the higher quality girls.

So here is the thing. We rank girls we think won't come lower bc we are. It as invested and excited about them. We focus on who we think we can get and so the lower list position of like a top mobile girl is our true place for her

I didn't realize some houses did this. The only girls we would list low even if we wanted them are huge in house legacies or girls with sitting sisters. Literally everyone else, mountain brook or not, is ranked by score. We've gotten some really amazing girls this way. Maybe girls wouldn't slip through the cracks if y'all would just do what RFM tells you to do

I tham no she said the "top" for some are not top for them bc there is not the investment or excitement about them -- all based on how interested the pnm seems to be. Kinda like not having interest in a hot guy because you can tell he is just being polite but has no interest in you. Why waste your emotional energy on a dead ended.

A "top" girl for one house is different for another.
Old row thinks that everyone has the same priorities as them, but that's just NOT true. They miss amazing girls because they're focused on in-state and perhaps my house misses some amazing girls because we're focused on out-of-state. Every house is going to "score" differently and has a different system for how they rank PNMs. A "top" PNM from small town Alabama that Phi Mu loves might have AWFUL conversations at my house and thus she will not be at the top of our list. Etc etc.

... and if you are an in-state or deep south OOS that is definitely on the radar for OR, but you are truly interested in a NR house -- you need to be very clear about this during IWT and in any further rounds. So often these girls (many of whom are great) come across in NR houses as indifferent or even not interested, when in fact they are interested in branching out. The NR actives may be biased to interpret this as being a little bishy and uninterested, which can get somebody that may even be on top of OR houses' radar, dropped by a NR house. In other words, you have to sell yourself even to NR houses and don't take for granted everyone else wants you just because some OR do.

I am from a middle tier new row house.
If you are from Mobile/Mt Brook/Mobile chances are you're gonna be lower on our list even if you have everything we want. We've done our research too, we know you and everyone you know is going KD/KKG/XO, we aren't going to waste time on it. Part of recruitment is being strategic and paying attention to patterns. We play to our strengths instead of going for girls that we know have strong connections to very different houses from ours.
Yes, sometimes girls fall through the cracks but the truth is that most in state PNMs have already made up their minds about us so hey, we're gonna make up our minds about them.
