please help

by: pnm

hey y'all... i really need some good and real advice. i've had serious cuts throughout all of rush, and when i got my schedule back this morning, i only had one house left. however, the one house i have left has been my least favorite house throughout the whole week. i honestly don't know how this happened, because i had recs for every house, i'm in state, and i have a very high gpa. regardless of these things, it still happened, but i'm trying to weigh my options. i don't think i will change my mind about this one house for pref (assuming that i even get invited to their pref party), so what should i do next? i really still want to be in a sorority, but i don't know what to do. would COB or snap bids be better options, or should i just drop and rush again next year? i really need some good advice because i have absolutely no idea what to do... please help!!!

If you drop because you don't like the house left I don't think you're eligible for a snap bid. Every house is great here. If you really do have a high gpa, recs, etc. then rerushing won't help you. Your best bet is to see I through. You'll find your people if the house you have keeps you.

if you do not accept a bid there is a chance you can get a snap bid. if you release yourself from recruitment there is a chance you can COB. the only time you would have to wait to rush again would be if you accepted a bid then dropped

Stick with it! Give that last house a chance to impress you at pref. And talk to your rho chi about snap bids. She can tell you what you'd have to do to be eligible.

With 150+ in each pledge class, I swear you will be able to find your niche group of friends. Just hang in there and ride this through to pref.

I'm going to be blunt and it's probably going to sting:

If your resume was that great and every house but 1 released you, you are not going to have a better rush next year as a sophomore. Sophomores who re-rush successfully tend to have a known issue that is fixable - ie, they were a grade risk or had no recs or were painfully shy.

Snap bids are not an option. First, houses have to not make quota during bid matching to even be eligible for snaps (RARE) and second, in that situation they usually look at top pnms who didn't return for pref. You probably got cut too early to be on anyone's radar for a snap should there even be any this year.

This one house sees something in you for their sisterhood. My advice IF you really want to be Greek is to finish the process. If they invite you to pref, you are guaranteed a bid from them. Every house is huge and offers basically the same sorority experience - living in the house, big/ lil sis, parties, participation in Greek events, etc. Your pledge class will be so huge that if you can't make a group of girls friends in it, sorry dear, the problem is you.

my biggest problem is that i am overweight, so i feel like if i got in shape, i would have a much better rush as a sophomore. is this unrealistic??

i don't see how that's an excuse at all, because that's literally the only thing that i can think of that would've prompted the kind of serious cuts that i received, seeing that the rest of the things most houses take into account were there for me

The sorority you have left is your best if not only chance of ever being in a sorority.

Sorry to be blunt, but it's true.

If it makes you feel better, you've only met a handful of girls. You don't REALLY know them, or what they're like. You'll probably end up with a big that you love, not to mention you haven't met anyone in your pledge class! There's still so much that can change your mind about this house. So if you're set on being in a sorority, this is it. Give them a chance. A REAL chance. Don't compare them to the experiences you had in other house. Just focus on THIS house.

Also, take a look around during parties at the other pnms. Those could be your pledge sisters.

Don't lose hope. It might be the place you find your best friend.

The same thing happened to me when I rushed a few years ago, and my rho chi gave me some great advice that I'll give to you. Keep with it, go to pref, get the bid, and meet your sisters. If you still don't feel like you fit in with the house, you can drop before initiation and re-rush as a sophomore. If, like me, you sold your house short during rush and you fall in love with it after really getting to know everyone, you'll be glad you didn't throw your bid away.

Just my opinion, but why would you want to go to a house that doesn't accept you as you are? The house you have left obviously sees past all that and seems to think you have some great qualities. Maybe you should give them a chance also?

If you are judging this one house you have left on their lower tier-ness or things you have read on here or things your friends say---- you need to get some sleep and wake up with a new outlook on this chapter. All the chapters here are truly awesome. This is your chance to a great sisterhood.

You are getting GREAT advice here. Listen to it. This house is most likely your only chance to be greek at Bama. The houses that dropped you will drop you again even if you lose weight. Spring rush is almost non existent here. You will be a sophomore and that is an uphill battle. COB is very unlikely. If you drop you are not eligible for a snap bid.

There is a real possibility that this house will drop you. Then you are eligible for a snap bid. But those are rare too

You will have 160 pledge sisters. Can you not find anyone in that large group to connect with? I don't believe it. Somehow this last house doesn't square with your self image or something

Stick it out! Or decide to find your place on this campus outside of the greek system You may have to anyway.

so rushing as a sophomore is harder than as a freshman? i've heard the opposite actually because of the quota thing... i'm not sure??

Much much harder as a sophomore. A successful sophomore is usually a transfer. Or maybe an athlete that absolutely couldn't go through rush freshman year. Almost always someone who has strong friends in a house

Who does not do well is someone dropped the year before.

And it's just harder

You would miss out on freshman year fun that could come with this house.
