No, it's usually girls in the most recent pledge class and it's usually their prettier girls and/or more "diverse" girls. I know in my house, the girls in the door stack don't get to choose whether or not they're in it, they're just chosen. However, being in the door stack includes more work so you may get your face plastered everywhere but you're definitely paying for it.

i know for a fact that at least half of the houses here choose the girls for the door stack from last years pledge class and they pick the prettiest girls

All houses alternate who's in the door. So for different days there may be different girls in the door. However, MOST girls who are ever chosen to be in the door are in the most recent pledge class. It just makes sense to have the sophomores in the door because that's who the new members are going to be interacting with the most. In my house we have different groups for the door for different days, but all the girls are sophomores. But some other houses may have a group in the door one day who's all officers or even seniors. It just depends on the house.
