letters on bid day

by: curious

I'm in a sorority at a northern school and noticed that new members at bama get stitched letters on bid day....we're not even allowed to freaking look at letters until we're initiated (insta bio, computer stickers) let alone letter clothing. Why is that a thing at bama? Is it a school thing or a chapter thing?

Its not a bama thing. Plenty of other schools wear their letters before initiation. We just cant wear anything with the crest on it.

On bid day we wear jerseys. It is tradition. This question has been asked a million times, thats just what we do

Transferred from a small northern sorority. I was allowed and encouraged to wear my letters during my pledge period, just not the crest since we don't learn the meaning of it until initiation.

There was one sorority at my school that didn't let their girls wear their letters or put their letters in their instagram bio until initiation. We all thought it was stupid and it was basically their way of hazing the new girls by making them feel inferior.

Until you are a member of the sorority that has never allowed their pledges to wear its letters or place them on insta, please do not call their tradition hazing. Hazing is sometimes considered an immediate threat to life and limb, and not being able to wear letters until initiated is not a threat of that nature. While hazing can also be defined as making someone feel inferior the act of not wearing sorority letters until becoming fully initiated into membership should not make any sane and intelligent young woman feel inferior. Turn your mind toward believing in the completion of the task of pledging being rewarded with initiation and the ability to wear your letters with pride for the rest of your life.

I definitely agree with you, it's ridiculous that anyone would consider basic things like not being able to wear the crest before initiation, having to attend new member education meetings, and going out with actives to be hazing. It devalues what a big deal real hazing actually is, like the situation at Penn State. That being said, some groups and even some universities do consider putting certain restrictions on new members to be hazing, so I do think it's a valid comment to make, even if we all know it's crazy.

To explain myself and give context:

The actual tradition I have no issues with. Makes perfect since. In my case with that one chapter, it was the attitude with which the rules were enforced. If they caught girls with any letter clothing they would line them up and scream at them, they would threaten to revoke their bid for looking up laptop stickers, etc. That chapter also hazed in other ways and were shut down for it after I left so people would group that with it.

I'm an initiated member at a different school as well that has a chapter of my sorority at alabama. What's interesting to me is that we were taught it was a national policy that we were not allowed to wear letters before initiation. (the spelled out name of the sorority was fine, just not the greek letters.) But apparently it's not a national policy because other chapters let their new members wear them on bid day.

Same situation. We were allowed to wear apparel with the name of our sorority on it but we weren't allowed to wear the actual letters or the crest.
