friend in a house

by: PNM

Truthfully how helpful is it to have a friend who is an active in a house. For example, I have a friend who I know is hoping I will pledge her sorority. Obviously I know it isn't an automatic bid but how exactly will it effect me / help me?

It really depends on who you know and how well you know them... If a PNM is friends with a handful of actives in a certain house then the chances she gets a bid is strong, even if the PNM doesn't have a stellar resume. However, if you just know of one active in a house then don't expect to be pulled through. Overall though, the more actives you know and the stronger the friendships the better.

It is pretty critical in OR and she needs to generate buzz for you. She can't do it alone. Also, many "friends" can actually turn on you in recruitment if they are passive aggressive and actually think you would not fit.

It can also depend on how influential your friend is in her chapter. If she is well-respected and sisters feel they can trust her it is much more likely they will help her when she's supporting you.

I am from a nondeep south but still southern state. My cousin (2 years older than me) is in an OR house. We are very close and I am on the safe contact list for 4 actives because I made good friendships through her (before even applying to Bama) and some are camp friends and we worked together. I don't feel guaranteed at all. Right now I want it more than anything but I am also a triple Alabama NR legacy. I don't feel a guarentee either. All the actives and alums I know made sure I felt this way.
Do I have a top 2 going in... Yes!! Do I think it MIGHT help... Yes!!
Do I feel dirty rushed... No!
I can't wait to be where I end up!
