confused and scared

by: PNM

Is it true that I will be severely limited on which sororities want me since I am overweight? I think the dresses I have picked out for rush flatter me, and I look put together, but there is not avoiding the fact that I'm still overweight. I'm kind of scared, because some people have told me that I will be cut by a majority of the sororities after IWT's because of this factor alone!! Should I even still go through recruitment? I'm confused..

please still rush. you're going to look amazing and as long as you're kind and are yourself you're gonna end up in a house that loves you. if a house cuts you because you don't fit a certain image, they didn't deserve you in the first place. can't wait to see you in a few weeks :)

When I rushed I was overweight. Yes, you will be very limited. Not tooting my horn but just giving you an example- I had a great resume, GPA, and was from a good area, on top of having at least 2 recs per house, and was dropped by all but one house by pref. It's a little demoralizing but I ended up with a bid so it wasn't so bad. Some other girls I met weren't so lucky. You should still rush though just to see, but don't get too attached to a house before pref

I'm sure you're beautiful just the way you are, but with how fast paced recruitment is, a lot of it is based on first impressions. And unfortunately, first impressions are based on looks. It's just human nature.

That being said, your options could be limited regardless of whether you're overweight or not. Think about all the girls who are gorgeous, have stellar grades and a great resume but only have 1 house for pref. It happens. And when you don't have "the look" it makes it even harder.

My advice is hope for the best but expect the worst. As long as you stick it out, you're likely to find a bid somewhere. (As long as you have everything else going for you - grades, recs, personality, etc)

Thank you all!! I forgot to say that I have a high GPA, and ACT score, and I'm also Southern. I have an average to impressive leaning resume, and I have 2 recs for all houses except for four of them, which I have one rec for each of those four houses. Hopefully, with all of these factors, recruitment will be successful for me, despite the weight factor! :)

I was overweight when I rushed, my stats sound pretty similar to you. I had heavy cuts after IWTs but after that I think the houses that kept me were actually interested in my personality and so I ended up having 2 houses at pref (not a full schedule but still had choice.)

Please rush because there are girls of all shapes and sizes in every house and they all bring something to the table. I hope you (+all the PNMs) come back and tell us how your recruitment went even if you don't want to specify which house you ended up in. Good luck!

What is considered overweight by sorority standards? I know skinny girls that say they're overweight and bigger girls that don't think they are. I know it depends on height but like if you are over a size 6 is that considered overweight?

Never ever ever ever ever EVER think a SIZE 6 is overweight. That is damaging thinking to yourself, and anyone else reading this struggling with body image.
