active bid day outfits

by: O

Why do actives on bid day dress up in random cute dresses/rompers instead of dressing up in costumes/outfits that match a theme for their bid day like most other schools?

It's just what we do, we like to look nice. The only school I really think does the costume thing well is ole miss, maybe UGA. Everyone else just looks dorky like the person above said. At least around the south.

I do think it's weird that new girls at UGA come to the houses dressed up when the actives are in costume

I've always that UGA's "white dress" rule was weird. Bid day should be fun and casual, I'd hate to be worrying about if my dress is too short/if my sweat is ruining the material/if my feet are gonna be covered in blisters.

Our house asks the actives to wear one of three colors...the colors of the sorority. We do look very nice though!

It does look nice when you guys match with the sorority colors, but some sororities don't match like I think Alpha Phi did whatever colors this past year according to their bid day video... which is really weird and looks bad.

The OP isn't wrong for asking. I'm an active, and I wish we did costumes. Most schools in the SEC actually do costumes, we are more unusual for not doing that. I know Ole Miss, Miss State, Tennessee, UGA, A&M, Arkansas all do it. That is half the SEC. Us and Auburn dress up and it is honestly weird to me.

I like that we don't dress up in costumes... Because really we're only with the new members for what? An hour? Two hours most? And most actives go to the bars afterwards, so it's nice not having to change and stuff. Also there are a lot of parents and siblings around and I feel that it would be even more overwhelming for them to see thousands of sorority girls in ridiculous costumes.

I'm an active from Mississippi and I honestly wish our bid day was a little different. I LOVE how Ole Miss and MSU do theirs. Everything is themed, the actives go all out in decorations and costumes, and part of the bonding on bid day is dressing and painting up the new girls when they run to your house. They also stay with the girls a lot longer and are not allowed out on bid night. Instead the whole chapter goes and does something fun together so everyone can start meeting everyone. I wish our day was less of a social/drinking event where we usher new girls in then immediately want to go out and more about meeting everyone and, ya know, sisterhood. There's every other night in college for the bars...why can't bid day just be bid day?

I know that Panhellenic encourages the immediate departure for new member retreat so that the actives don't have time to get the new girls drunk, but I do wish we could hang out with them for a while before they go.

@Well...that's the other huge difference. At Ole Miss the girls drink but still do a huge chapter event. At MSU there's no drinking and it's a day just for the whole sorority to be together. I kind of like that. I don't think Bid Day has to be an event to pregame, and I'm always jealous of my friends from highschool who have adorable pictures and lots of memories of meeting their now best friends from bid day.

...and yes I go here but am from MS. Really didn't think it wasn't crystal clear.

I like the themed bid days with the casual outfits. I just think the themes are really cute although some sororities take the outfits too far.

I prefer dresses to costumes. I think it looks classier, more southern and takes less thought after a long week.

Up here in the North each of our houses dresses as they wish on Bid Day. Some go white dress, others go black dress or red dress, one goes Hawaiian theme.

FIPG and national orgs are moving away from costumes...promoting "real world" classier experiences... ex moved/moving away from skits.
