I was taught that a lady never walks around when she has a cigarette in hand. This is an old, old rule, but nowadays better that she never smokes at all. I was also taught that she avoids being photographed holding a drink, that she crosses her legs at the ankle and not the knees, and a lot of other stuff that is good advice but is just not taught a lot outside of the South. Some of these rules are still taught in the better houses throughout the South, and a lot of us down here still take cotillion in middle school. Don't get me started on posing for photos with hands on hips; never a good look but sooo many girls think they need to do it...

Do girls here actually smoke? That's pretty disgusting, not going to lie.

Look, for those who choose to smoke, it is considered proper manners to not walk around spreading your smoke and ashes all over the place. So just sit yourself down next to a table where you can use something appropriate for an ashtray. When you are finished you can put out your cigarette and move on. No one wants to have your ashes flicked on their clothes or their carpet, or your nasty trail of smoke engulfing them as you pass by; doing so is rude and disgusting. Hence, the rule.

I know that in my sorority, that rule is left over from years ago when ladies smoked because everyone smoked and no one knew how bad it was for you, it's not a new rule. I personally can only think of 5 or 6 of my sisters who actually smoke, and it's typically when they're drunk. It's more of a guy thing but we keep the rule just in case
