where to go between houses

by: pnm

Where do pnms go/do when they don't have a full card after day 1 when they are between houses?
Are pnms allowed to have there phones - like when they are waiting between parties if they have a big gap? Thanks

I just hung out in Starbucks or at my stationed rho chi area, you can go back to your dorm if you are close like tut or have time but I didn't, plus I wasn't familiar with the campus and would have probably had trouble getting back to pres area on my own lmao. U can have your phones

All girls are supposed to go back to their tent when they don't have a party. I know this past year was different because of the long weather delays, so last year a lot of girls were allowed to Tut/Burke/Starbucks and wait there instead of waiting in the rain. But for the most part, Rho Chis aren't allowed to let their girls leave their tent (unless for bathroom breaks) and the idea behind this is that there may be actives in Starbucks/Tut/etc that may talk to you or whatever.

And I know on pref you're not allowed to use your phone.

You mostly just hang out with your rho chi group at your "home base". You are allowed to have phone but technically you're not supposed to use them during pref, totally depends on your rho chis on whether or not that's enforced though

Be sure to bring a towel or something to sit on because there are tons of breaks and usually your only option is to sit on the ground. I found all the breaks to be one of the most annoying parts of rush because they make the days so long. I know they are unavoidable but just preparing you for that because I didn't know how much sitting around we would do beforehand.

And even girls with full schedules have a lot of breaks, so every PNM should be ready for a ton of down time

Yes very true, I had a full schedule every round and there was still a lot of sitting around. This applies for everyone.

you will be at your tent the majority of the time when you have breaks... that being said, PLEASE bring thick towels to sit on. these tents don't have any chairs so you'll either be standing for God knows how long or you'll have to sit on the grass. and no one wants a grass/mud stain on their dress.

I've never seen a book listed i the items to keep in your bag, but it sounds like a good thing to throw in? Would it be considered rude, considering everyone will probably be on their phones?

You can bring a book. You probably won't have much time to read early on but on pref night your Rho Chis will most likely tell you to bring things to entertain yourself.

Definitely bring a book! I got so much reading done during recruitment haha. During IWTs you won't have a ton of time to focus - I spent all of my breaks trying to remember what just happened in precious houses or preparing for my next visit - but after that it's great to have.

IMO reading a book is no more solitary/rude than staring at your phone and texting people from home. Don't worry about that!

Since we're on the topic of what to bring, do not bring a designer purse!! It rained all through rush last year and its been raining a lot this summer so your bag will most likely get rained on at some point.
Also, I don't suggest bringing a black or navy blue longchamp because EVERY girl had one last year and it got super confusing and I could never find my bag when I was in a hurry. If you do bring one, tie a ribbon or something on it to help set it apart.

PLEASE bring a waterproof bag that zips!! If it rains your rho chi will be picking up your bags and tossing them somewhere dry and you want to make sure all your stuff stays inside. And a lot of times your home base station will flood a little (or be soaked if you're on grass), be prepared because I know multiple girls ended up with ruined phones last year

If your home base is on front row (phi mu, kkg, axo) then go in the stadium. It’s air conditioned so it’s a good place to take a break, and it’s big enough that you can get some space from others.

Does it matter if our bags are nice?? Will actives see them and will we be judged on them??? I need to get a tote but if they won't be seen I don't want to splurge

Actives won't see your bags... Actives technically aren't even supposed to look at you any time when you're not scheduled for a party with them. So just get a bag for practical use... It doesn't matter if it's a Longchamp or just something you picked up from Target, as long as it's waterproof and zips then you'll be fine.

Would having a backpack be a bad idea, or should we stick to the totes?

I wouldn't recommend a backpack because the backsweat will be unreal

I agree with S. Also, dresses ride up in the back when you wear a backpack. I personally think the best bag to bring is a long champ but like I said above, pick a unique color or put something on it to help it stand out from the rest.
