greek chic questions

by: pnm

The following have grade suggestions:
AXO - 3.0
XO - 3.0
DDD - 3.0

Why would they list this so low when they are going to cut you if this is what you have?

I also noticed some higher suggested:
ADPi - 3.2
AGD - 3.3 ( I heard form an active it's actually 3.4)
DZ - 3.2
KKG - 3.33
PM - 3.3

Do you think these really mean anything?

Suggested GPAs are usually an indication of what GPA the house cuts at. To be honestly I'm surprised to see DZ putting their suggested that high (I don't remember them doing that in the past), they are one of the houses that doesn't have the ability to be as selective and taking grade risks who are cute is usually a way bottom houses try to balance that out. Good for them for making a push for a higher GPA though!

Also, not sure why AXO, XO, and DDD only have 3.0's, maybe to leave room for a couple really well connected girls with lower GPAs? They all obviously have really high house GPAs so I can't imagine many underachieving girls get in

Maybe pnms wouldn't so shocked when they got cut if they really knew what the actual grade cuts are.

I think that AXO, XO, and DDD all have a suggested 3.0 because they don't want to come off as "exclusive." The truth of the matter is that public opinion means a lot to sororities... All houses want to come off as inviting, fun, and cool. Having a higher GPA limit tends to make a house look stern and too serious which can deter a lot of PNMs... When houses like AXO, XO, and DDD are known for being extremely academically focused it doesn't paint a fun social picture, so I think their 3.0 "suggestion" is more of a front to make themselves more lighthearted than how they actually are.

And while that's the case for AXO, XO, and DDD I think it's the complete opposite for other houses like ADPi, DZ, and KKG. I think these houses have raised their suggested GPA to appeal to the more academic PNMs. These three houses don't have anything out of the ordinary to offer PNMs thus why they get into a rut of recruiting very mixed pledge classes... And by raising a GPA minimum they can become more selective.

Obviously this is all what I think. The only house that has a real GPA minimum above a 3.0 that will not take grade risks is AXO.

Adpi is always in top 5 grades, with DZ I can see what you're saying with trying to look more academic but adpi actually is that academic

thought I would go adpi going into rush bc I had older friends in the house but I only had a 3.0 and the girls told me after rush that adpi has a national policy to cut at 3.2. so for them it definitely means something

That's not true lmao. I had ADPi at pref and probably would have gotten a bid if I ranked them #1. And I had a 3.0.

Sororities don't have national gpa policies. They strongly encourage chapters to take above a certain gpa, but in the end they can't really enforce sometimes. Think about how that would affect bottom chapters who can't be selective during rush? That doesn't make sense.

I went back to the 2014, 2015, and 2016 Greek Chics to look at the suggested GPAs.

AXO, XO, DDD, AGD, DZ and PM had a suggested GPA of 3.0 during those three years.

AGD raised there suggested GPA this year to 3.3. There suggested GPA was a 3.0 the three years previous.

ADPi had a suggested GPA of a 3.2 all three previous years.

KKG has steadily raised their suggested GPA from 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.3 those three years.

I believe seeking clarification on the reasons the suggested GPAs are set where they are and if they are held steadfast is treading on membership selection and should be kept private.

The only thing that I can conclude is that dorks want to recruit more dorks. Pan love!

Don't assume a sorority will absolutely cut you if your grades don't meet a suggested minimum. Look up the definition of 'suggestion', then the definition of 'mandate'. Life isn't cut and dried, it flows and is beautifully malleable.

Exactly. These GPA suggestions are SUGGESTIONS.

Some of those, including kappa I'm pretty sure, could be national policies not just the Alabama chapter

But the truth is most, if not all houses, will take a grade risk if she's worth it.

True but most of those spots for grade risks, especially for southern houses like kkg or pm, are reserved for well connected girls with in house friends who are still wanted despite the low gpa. If you have under the recommended gpa for a sorority and you don't have girls in the house pulling for you or you didn't have a strong connection with the girl who rushed you it's a pretty safe bet you'll get cut

Lots of sororities take lots of grade risk. If they want you then they want you and they will find a way around it as long as it doesn't break a national rule. I know plenty of girls in "top" houses that had very low GPAs going through recruitment.
