dz question
by: Curiousity
I really hate to ask this here, because I know some jerk is gonna use it as an excuse to bash them, or other houses. Please go away if that is your goal.
I know you should go into Recruitment open minded, but everyone has a 'favorite' before it starts. For me, that is DZ. Mainly because I am very interested in their philanthropy. In my research, they seem to be middle or sometimes top at other schools, so what's the deal here? Why do you all seem to not have a very high opinion of them? \n\n\n\n\n

I think they have had a tough time recruiting the last 2 years (I noticed a difference in their PCs after gpb got a new house). As a whole they aren't the most involved house and don't have the best GPA (but not the worst either). There are some really great DZ's I think that they just have a very mixed group of girls so they have been bottom/ close to the bottom for a while.
If they are a house you are interested in please don't let anything you read on here sway you against that! Girls in "bottom" houses still have an amazing sorority experience and love their houses and their sisters

If DZ is where you think you belong, go DZ. Obviously feel it out during rush but don't let bullies on the internet make you think there is anything wrong with that group of girls. I have several DZ friends and love them all. Certain members of "Top Tier" sororities spread gossip to keep themselves at the top. Go where your heart takes you.

Short answer-- they're nice girls but they just aren't super popular with PNMs which is a lot of what rankings are based off of.
As for the philanthropy, and I am not trying to bash DZ because they are not the only house like this, but they are not super involved with it. When I rushed several years ago they didn't even talk about it on philanthropy day, they played a recruitment like video and then the girl asked me if I had any questions and I was like "well what's your philanthropy?" And I STG she had no idea

We are having a regular pc14 party. Guess we have senioritis already haha.
About DZ though, then I went through they were pretty inconsistent and did not seem to have any sort of clear vision or confidence in who or what they are. They had some Atlanta and bigger city members that were very active in recruitment, but had some wild reputations. But they also had the girls next door. They had super smart seeming actives, then others that did not seem to really care much at all. Then the building boom left them behind. I agree that GPHi and DG's rise has been at DZ's expense. Those two NR houses got built while DZ was in a dank place (sorry, it was). Combine all that and you have a tough several years I guess. They have a decent legacy base and if they can start to keep the quality legacies and build with decent grade and move away from the party image and go more after the ADPi feel, they should get it going again. I have lots of friends in DZ and they are happy but don't like their campus rep and are not super proud of being in DZ. Kinda sad. They also have had lots of drops when they take the in-state girls that no OR wants. They should not take somebody that is from a good Alabama high school just because.

I have several friends that are in DZ and love it. I know they did a week for their philanthropy last semester and did some cool stuff on campus with it. I saw girls on the quad several times that week. I think they also raised a good bit of money for UADM this past year. If you think it is a good fit for you, follow your heart. Your sorority experience is what you make it. Overall, I really think getting a new house will help them because I did think that it hurt that they were at the end of the building project. All houses at alabama are great and Im sure you'll find the right house!

TBH you shouldn't pick a house based on their philanthropy. I mean you'll have fundraisers throughout the year for it, but it's pretty rare for girls to go beyond just what their chapter does... Meaning most girls (in all houses) don't have an attachment to their philanthropy beyond just what their house has done.
But DZ is a fine house. Solid bottom tier, but again, tiers/ranks don't matter in day to day life here.
#7by: My opinion
One of the major reasons Dz doesn't have a good reputation is because they're kind of weird but also loud. They're honestly not much weirder then a few other new row houses (looking at you theta) but a lot of dz girls have big, outgoing personalities so it's easier to notice it. They're also known as a slightly house but don't have a really good quality to balance it out (i.e. Alpha phi is a party house but at least they're hot)

Omg yes I rushed in '14 it was so awkward when I had to ask what their philanthropy was. I did ask younger girls in my house and they said that when they went through they actually talked about their philanthropy at least
