pm is respectable...but not top

by: Sorry?

Top houses don't COB. You can be very well-rounded but if you COB, you're not desired enough among PNMs and aren't as selective. Top houses have high rush return rates. PM did COBs. Yes they have great grades, involvement, and are usually pretty classy but they obviously weren't among the most desired houses last recruitment. They're a fantastic house, as are alll UA chapters, but they're not desired enough during rush to be "top."

Agree. Not sure why so many rank PM high. I really wish Pan would make rush return rates public. I think that would really affect the way people rank.

Being a top house isn't just about rush statistics... Being a top house means that you're a consistently outgoing house through the year, not just during one week. PM may not be the MOST desired house during rush, but they are desired. PM is also very involved, they have good grades, and they're a good mix of being social and being focused.

Idk, to each their own I guess but in my opinion PM is a top house... They get a lot of their top targets as well as other houses' top targets.

I see where you're coming from, I guess it's a agree to disagree. Top at most schools where I am familiar with the Greek system means the most sought after by PNMs. Grades, involvement, looks, etc. are all important and can affect a reputation, but if you look up articles about top houses, it's which houses the most fits wanted to pledge. Girls want to be in that house. I respect alll of PM's accomplishments, really, I just think that makes them an accomplished house, not a top. Now if Phi Mu manages to have an awesome recruitment 2017 and pulls off a great,COB free rush then they will have my respect as a true top.

I'm not the biggest fan of PM, but just because a house COBs doesn't mean anything. They hit quota during recruitment, which means that they were desired among PNMs and did just fine.

They reached quota but still had enough room for members through COB. While COB-ing looks better than snap bids, it still says the chapter wants more girls to fill up due to say, girls dropping. (I don't believe 30 PMs dropped but it wasn't the very few that a top house would have drop),

Since total is set at the average chapter size I don't think you can knock chapters for needing to COB anymore. This puts 8 sororities under total every year after bid day and chances are some of them will be too houses.

Whats the difference between COB and snap bids?

- Snap bids only happen after bid matching when a house is still below quota. They can then 'snap' pnm's who are still available to receive a bid because of being released from all houses before pref. Pnm's who dropped out of recruitment are not eligible for a snap. Snap bid girls are called in person before bids go out and they run to their house with the other new members. None of the new member class knows who got a snap bid, if any, and only a select few actives know who was snapped and it is kept under wraps so there is no stigma.
- Continuous Open Bidding, or COB, happens after recruitment is over. A chapter may COB if they did not reach quota or if they are under house total. It is up to each individual chapter to decide if they want to COB at all and how and when they do it. PNM's who sign their MRABA card after prefs and then don't accept a bid, or who accepted a bid and then dropped their house before initiation, are not eligible for COB and must wait a full year before being eligible for another bid.
- Snap Bids and COB are not a good backup plan to get a bid. Best odds for all PNM's are with formal recruitment.

Sure, PM can get girls to pledge, but they have a hard time keeping them. A lot of girls drop out every year. They may look good from the outside with grades, involvement and looks, but I think there's a lot of internal drama that goes on in PM that other top houses don't have.

A lot of really good houses COB just to get the specific girls they want without competing with other houses

If they were really so good they could handle the competition....

There aren't any good girls left for COB. That's the point.
