all rounds

by: Mary

I'm going to try to summarize this here.

After the first round of parties, you will be cut based on GPA or your reputation.

After the next round, your activities MIGHT make a difference, based on the house. Neither GPA nor activities will probably matter at ALL after this.

After the third round, and probably the second round, it is based on your conversation skills alone. This doesn't mean just answering questions the actives ask you. This means, can you ask them good questions? Are you interesting when you answer? Are you stiff, or do you seem fun? Would I want to eat dinner with you or hang out with you? Do you fit with my house?

After probably ice water tea cuts, no one cares what or who you were in high school. You are starting over, and you have a few minutes to impress. Work on your conversation skills over this next month.

Good luck!

Good post for the 90% of pnms that are not already known by most of the sororities (the top pnm group). For the top pnm group, who or what you were in high school does carry over a fair amount.

It does suck for in-state and known pnms. That is because being in-state or otherwise already known by actives means you have to live with your past whether it is good, bad, had some bad episodes, some mistakes or whatever. If you are non-connected OOS the bonus is you get a fresh start. Of course, then the OR trolls on here will call your house names, bottom, lower-tier, or whatever. Tell you what -- you should never strive to please the OR trolls. It is a no win proposition.

Looks like one fell through the cracks. So rude.

If you are a legacy, most houses, but not all, will ask you back to second round out of courtesy, even if they know they will be releasing you. Good post.

What about looks? I am from far OOS and have no connections to Bama and I have no grade/rep issues. But I don't wear a ton of makeup and I'm on the heavier side for my height. Do heavier girls face cuts because of that after the first round like girls with low GPAs or bad reputations? Genuinely looking for an honest answer, not trying to be a troll or anything. I understand I will probably not fit in with a very looks-conscious house that are constantly mentioned here and I'm cool with that but I just want to know what to expect from everyone else.

It totally depends. A great personality can help, and looking put together. Great outfit, great haircut, manicured nails (not necessarily painted, but well groomed), brows done. Even for "looks" houses, this can take you far, especially if you have grades and stuff.

Even the "looks" houses have girls that are not that stereotype. This is why greekrank and tent talk is so bad. You may find the best friends and your bridesmaids at pm, aphi, zta or kappa.... just do you and follow your heart.

Thank you guys so much. You were both so nice and answered my question. I will go through with a 100% open mind and see what happens. Thanks again!!

Answers above are okay but here's a personal example-- I was a southern OOS with 4.0, came from a pretty well to do family in a big city near Alabama but lacked connections and was a little heavy when I rushed-- I was cut hard. Had great, fabulous convos all week. Yeah I stuck it out but I don't fit well in my house. I really think that weight is the one thing that overrides everything but connections. I don't say this to scare you but just know that you will probably take some heavy cuts. Unattractive/overweight girls in top or even middle houses had good connections.
