So if i'm not religious and for the most part a democrat, will I find my people at UA? Are there any sororities that have more of my type of girls than others?

I'm pretty much the same and I was super involved in a lot of left-leaning organizations in high school (young democrats, feminism club, etc) and i'm a little worried i might be cut by houses because of that?! super worried that rushing isn't the right decision for me even though i really want the sisterhood :/

As an active I personally wouldn't like to see those types of activities on a resume. I wouldn't immediately cut you but you would have to play some catch up. That being said, there are girls in my house that would connect with you over that. It entirely depends who you get matched with

APhi, DZ, AOPi, GPB, ZTA all have a lot of liberals

Not that it would suede my choice, but are those all considered lower tier?

No, they're not all considered lower tier. And as a PNM you shouldn't be talking like that. All houses here are amazing and ranks don't matter. You'd be lucky to get a bid from literally any of them.

Hey girl, your religious and political beliefs won't come up during the recruitment process, but once you are in a house you will find girl who are just like you ! I'm in a new row house rn and while most of the girls in my house are republican I'm a democrat, we don't see eye to eye but we respect each other's belief's! A true sister will accept you even if your beliefs differ from there's.

Thank you! I totally am fine having friends with different views as long as they respect mine :)

Yes, exactly.

If you are a liberal in a sorority at Alabama you have to accept that most girls aren't going to see eye-to-eye with you. Just love them and support them and hope that they love and support you. I admit it hurts to see people saying they wish they didn't have liberals in their houses, liberals shouldn't bother rushing, etc because I go out of my way to be kind to my sisters even when they say things I disagree with... That should be going both ways. We're all entitled to our opinion!

Honestly, no matter what house you end up in, there will be a Republican majority. This is Alabama. Almost everyone from the South that comes to Bama has a conservative political alignment, and truthfully, a lot of Northerners/Westerners who come to Bama do so because they want this type of atmosphere.

You will find girls in all the houses who are liberals. But it's not going to be a lot, especially in the Southern majority houses. That being said, if you're someone who doesn't know how to hold your tongue then you may want to practice that and even consider other options. Very rarely will there be politics brought into sorority life, but it's the little things that bother the more liberal bunch... Such as be expected to wear certain things, being expected to act a certain way, being expected to look a certain way, etc. I know recently, block seating was a topic of discussion in my house because it is now open for sororities to apply and a lot of girls in my houses didn't want to apply because we didn't want to upset the fraternities... And I know a lot of girls in other houses felt the same way, which is why I think only like two houses actually applied for block seating.

Overall, you can find girls in any house who believe in the same things you do... But it can be difficult especially if you're someone who always says what's on your mind or has to have the last word or whatever. If you think sorority life is for you then that's great...

But if you're having reservations I suggest researching it more and try to see if you can get people's experiences on it.

Hi, thanks for the response. Im actually from the South but grew up in a larger city so I experinced both types of people and my family is also split when it comes to politics. As for how to act I grew up saying ma'am and sir, dressing conservatively when needed, etc. And Im all for respecting each others views!

Might be an ignorant question, but what do you when when you talked about the issue of block seating?

Okay well block seating is basically the section of seats right behind the end zone in the football stadium... So obviously they're amazing seats. For years, block seating was given to the fraternities that applied... And certain sections within the block seating was given based on merit, so the frats with the highest grades, involvement, etc got the best seats and so forth.

Now, block seating has been opened up to sororities. That being said, if literally ANY sorority apples for block seating, they'll get the best section because sororities are obviously way more involved, academically focused, etc than frats. However, a lot of sororities didn't apply for block seating because they didn't want to "piss off" the frats. In my house specifically, my chapter got to vote on whether or not we wanted to apply for block seating... Girls got to vouch for the pros and cons and then we voted. By a majority, my house didn't want to apply for block seating.

I brought block seating up because it's stuff like this that can bother the more liberal/girl power thinker.

which 2 sororitys applied for block seating?

By: pnm
Report
by: active

To continue, the REASON why sororities don't want to piss off the fraternities with this block seating situation is because of the swaps... Swaps are organized by the sorority, meaning the sorority asks the fraternities to swap with them, and the frats can easily say no... Especially if they have a reason like "you took our block seating." I know someone commented above about why girls should take block seating if they want, but it's all a cycle... If a sorority takes block seating from the fraternities, the fraternities are more likely to decline swapping together, if the frat declines a swap then the social calendar struggles, if the social calendar struggles then some girls drop because the sorority isn't "fun" enough, if girls drop then the entire house struggles, etc...

Theta probably has the most liberal members. They're the only non-Machine sorority so they're all pretty cool with being the black sheep.

By: yo
by: ?

All the Theta's I know are staunch Republicans... Same for ZTA. From my experience, DZ, GPB, and APHi have a lot of Democrats...

But thats just from what I've seen. Obviously every house has both.

It's Bama so every house is going to have Republicans, I've just always gotten the impression that as a whole Theta is the closest thing we have to an 'alternative' sorority besides, like, SDT.

@yes if you google "university of alabama machine" you will get a lot of very helpful and extensive information that is probably more accurate than anything you'll get here! i especially recommend The Bitter Southerner's profile on Elliot Spillers and stuff the Crimson White has written because all of that is by UA students that understand our campus climate.

basically some frats are not part of the machine and don't necessarily vote/campaign for the machine backed campus. for one reason or another Theta has never been affiliated with the machine and they are the only sorority with that distinction. While various houses have, throughout history, come out in support of independent candidates, that is very rare and they usually end up facing some sort of penalty for it from the machine frats.

Theta isn't affiliated with the Machine because they decline. Every year the Machine offers them to join but they decline the invitation... I think it's just because Theta has never been a part and they don't see a reason in joining all of a sudden, especially when the benefits aren't that amazing. And to those who don't know, the Machine is a secret organization that influences campus politics. As of recent years, their biggest focus has been on ensuring that the SGA president is from a Machine-backed Greek organization. And I know Homecoming queen is also from a Machine-backed sorority. However, in terms of Theta, they still have a lot of girls on SGA and holding other substantial positions on campus.

Not being Machine affiliated does not equate to an "alternative experience." Lol Theta is literally like all the other of the 15 NPC sororities here and they vary greatly from SDT. The Thetas I know all experience the same things that I do in my sorority...

If you're a PNM searching for an "alternative experience" then I suggest SDT, ADX, or any of the academic or theatrical Greek organizations.
