will sdt ever be successful at bama?

by: Curious

The thread about SK mentioned SDT and I was wondering if they ever plan on trying to compete with the other houses on campus? Is it that they're not interested in being part of formal recruitment or are they just not ever going to be on that level?

I think SDT has found a system that works for them - providing an "alternate" sorority experience for girls seeking smaller class sizes or lacking the desire to participate in formal recruitment (or rush again as sophomores if they've been dropped.) For them there's no point in fixing something that ain't broken. Why bother trying to compete with other houses when they are perfectly content with what they currently offer to members?

I just want to clarify that I think SDT not participating in formal recruitment is unfair and I wish things were different. But OP asked "if they ever plan" on competing with us, and I think the answer is no. I'm not condoning their attitude, just explaining what I have observed.

You have a poor understanding of the meaning of success for an NPC sorority named Sigma Delta Tau. Their consecutive existence at Alabama since 1935 indicates generations of strong, capable women using their hearts and minds to do good for their campus and communities while overcoming jealousy and hate spread by the likes of people who do not appreciate the differences in sorority life offered by each individual NPC organization.

Pledge numbers do not solely define sorority life. Character, civility, dignity and finer purposes exude from every better Alabama sorority woman including those in Sigma Delta Tau.

Alabama has always made room at the table for their fine sorority alumnae, including those who have made Sigma Delta Tau their initiated sorority home.

Unless SDT leaves for four years and then recolonizes, which is never going to happen, they will fail. Think how you would feel as a PNM if SDT all of a sudden was doing formal recruitment and you got stuck with them. It would be a complete disaster.

Logistically it would be impossible. According to the spring 2016 grade report they had 50 members TOTAL compared to 330+ for everyone else. When you factor in girls potentially being Rho Chis or having late internships, it would be cruel and unfair for everyone involved to have like 40 girls trying to rush 2,000+ PNMs. It would not work on any level.

They've basically dug themselves into a ditch at this point because the disparity in PC sizes is so extreme. This is not a matter of patiently taking a few more girls every year until you're at quota. They are literally 1/8 the size of everyone else.

I should also add that sometimes colonizing or struggling sororities will bring in members from nearby chapters to help recruit (for example we might see UAB and Auburn girls helping out SK). That would be more difficult for SDT, whose nearest chapters are all 200+ miles away.

In all honesty, if SDT wanted to change and commit to formal rush and commit to growing their chapter then I think Panhellenic, their nationals, and their alum would all find a feasible way to do so. As you said, a chapter of 50 cannot rush nearly 3000 girls. But maybe they could bring in representatives, maybe they could bring in alum from recent years, maybe they could do a presentation and then speak to the PNMs in groups? Obviously, their way of rushing the PNMs would be drastically different from the way the other 16 houses would... BUT I truly believe that if there's a will there's a way... Especially at a school like Alabama where Panhellenic is already desperately trying to find a way to combat the overflowing houses.

Idk but as an active here I really don't think it's fair that they're a NPC sorority and don't have to deal with the stresses of massive pledge class numbers or formal rush. I get it, they like how they operate, but at the end of the day it's not fair. Period. Shape up or ship out.
