by: CuriousThoughts on Sigma Kappa coming to campus in the next couple years?

If they eventually recruit well, perhaps each of our chapters can reduce our new member classes, which would be a good thing.
Sigma Kappa will have to be strong and have a really positive new member program. PNMs will still look for more established houses so they have to work so much harder for a rep.

SK is being brought to Alabama because of the dense amount of girls in sorority life. Houses that operate with 400+ girls is not comfortable for anyone. It's stressful for the PNMs, it's stressful for the actives, it's stressful for the girls on Exec Board in all houses, it's stressful for the house staff, and it's stressful for Panhellenic. No one really wants a new sorority to come to campus, but it's something that has to happen unless Panhellenic stops makings sure almost all PNMs get a bid.
Personally, I enjoy that my pledge class is large, but there comes a point where it's too big. I think there should be a 100 girl cap to the amount of girls per pledge class... Even though I love my sisters, it's not fun being suffocated by 400 other girls every time there's an event. It's not fun having so many sisters in my pledge class that I don't know a handful of their names, let alone girls in other pledge classes.
Alabama has such a strong and amazing Greek system, but the amount of girls per house is absurd. It's great that there are so many different personalities but the truth is that I don't know a majority of them. SK is being brought here in hopes to combat the growing house sizes. Personally, I'm not excited for another house. I think our 16 houses are great and SK personally wouldn't appeal to me as a PNM. BUT I know that this is necessary. The only other way to combat the growing house sizes to to lower the Bid Match Rate, which I know will never happen.

I feel that we should welcome SK to campus again! To handle it any other way is rude and self-defeating! For the increasingly high numbers of OOS PNMs, it should work! Nationally, They're strong and this should help. SK is well regarded in the Northeast and a lot more recognizable than an AGD, for example!

I am super happy to see SK back on our campus and I think they are a step in the right direction, however, they still aren't going to magically solve our size issues. Take the number of girls who got bids last year and divide it by 17 - you still have 146. It's not as big a difference as we need, tbh.
However, I hope that SK can successfully colonize and show other Panhellenic sororities that it is possible to do at Alabama. I mean, my best friend from home goes to a small school in the northeast that had 2 sororities successfully colonize within a 3-year period and another scheduled for next year. If SK can do well then we can hopefully continue to increase the number of chapters on our campus and get chapter sizes to a healthy -
but not overwhelming - level.
I do not think SDT can be successful as a traditional sorority at Alabama. Their nationals is SUPER weak and I do not think they have a SINGLE chapter in the south that isn't woefully struggling, which doesn't bode well for their alumnae support now (and down the line.) Truth be told I think SK is in fact more "fully capable" of being competitive here than SDT ever will.

additionally, once a chapter has a charter, it's no longer a colony, so none of the three mentioned above are "failed colonies". There was a serious decline in greek life involvement a few decades ago that caused tons of chapters to close. that sucks, but it doesn't mean this colony will fail. To invest the time, money, and energy in colonizing at a school like Alabama is a gamble no sorority will take lightly.
And finally, I think we all know the reason SDT will not be considered to participate in formal recruitment in the foreseeable future. it's unfortunate, but too many PNMs will prejudge them instead of giving them a chance, and they seem to have found their niche. Let's instead focus on the wonderful chapters we have (and will soon have) who can all help carry the burden of so many PNMs. A strong panhellenic community is the best for all of us.

... And I am really glad they are coming here! We need more chapters and our greek system will benefit with more Panhellenic sororities for so many reasons.
Please welcome them and help them create a positive rep to PNMs and our community.
