greek life

by: Past life

I wish this wasn't true, but this website-its nastiness, gossip, and pettiness- is an accurate reflection of Greeklife here at bama. It's not that sororities are rivals, but the sisters are rivals with each other. For example, it is common knowledge that Phi Mus are super mean to each other and the southern girls in Kappa dont talk to the non-southern girls... etc. Plegde classes are too big for the girls to bond, so it gets extremely cliquey.

The people I know who are the most unhaply and who transferred after first semester or after their freshman year were all in sororities. This isn't the case always, but I'd say for 90% of girls they soon realize Greek life is a waste of time and money. It's usually a good fit for southern girls who have expected to join a sorority their whole life, but if you're not that, just be warned, it's not that great. Sorority girls are known on campus to be rich and that's about it. Those who aren't in Greek don't look up to y'all or think you do any kind of good.

I don't want to be negative, but this is stuff I wish I had known before I had rushed at Alabama.

Joining a sorority changed my life, fullstop. I love my letters, I love my Panhellenic community, and I LOVE my sisters with everything I have. I'm sorry that your experience has been different but for me, a middle class girl from the north seeking sisterhood and support, my sorority experience has been nothing but joy and positivity.

Is it perfect? No. Has it made me a better person? 100%.

You. A "middle class" girl can't afford a sorority at Alabama. Dues start at what, 3k? The lack of awareness!!! Great example people. And yes, sororities can be great for some, but there are plenty of opportunities for charity work, friendship, and leadership positions all over campus.

A middle class girl from the north/midwest is upper class in alabama. I'm considered middle class in my wealthy midwest suburban town. But my family can afford my tuition (no scholarships) and sorority dues perfectly fine.

honestly you sound like a sad gdi. you sound like a poster child for bernie sanders. you sound like you think tuition should be free and that greek life is paying for friends.

just shut up. there's a saying that goes around that goes "from the outside looking in you can't understand it, form the inside looking out you can't explain it." you have no idea what some of the sisterhoods are like here, even if 20 actives from one house tell you its a certain way, you still have absolutely no idea how everything truly works. and this site is especially good at fluffing up rumors that hold little to no truth. are there girls in some old row houses that you mentioned that don't get along with their sisters? yes. but the side you don't see is the majority of the sisters who would do anything for eachother.

greek life is an amazing thing. having 400+ girls who would do anything for me just because we share the same letters is something I'm appreciative for everyday. people like you are those who give greek life a bad rep.

I don't want to feed the troll, but this post makes me so sad. I am a PM, and we don't have a bad sisterhood. Do we have competitive girls? Yes! That's what we recruited! And sometimes those girls want the same leadership positions, and that can cause a temporary conflict. But at the end of the day, we have each other's backs. I can't know what goes on in any other house. My friends in OTHER houses may complain about something or someone because they need to vent, or because I'm their friend. It doesn't define their house, and I can't make a generalization based on it. Look, Greek life isn't for everyone, but it's been amazing for me. I hope all of you have a great experience at Bama, no matter if you are Greek, Independent, from the North, South, East or West. There are plenty of places to find your home, and plenty of ways to make a name for yourself. We have the largest, best Greek community in the country. There are no bad houses at UA, just different ones with different priorities. We should celebrate that. We have one of the best schools in the country, even without our Greek system. We should celebrate that too! So, all that said, roll tide.
