truth about maximizing your options

by: Well

No one wants to say this but....
If any of the following applies to you, follow my advice:
1. You have zero connections and are not from a southern state
2. If you have problems in MORE THAN ONE area (grades, looks, zero extracurricular, connections)
3. Possible bad rep (or definite bad rep)

You may make it to round 2 with a bunch of options but will have DRASTIC CUTS at round 3. What you need to do is take an realist inventory when ranking! If there is a top or mid house you know isn't a good fit and you have zero chance then rank them lower than a "lower" house you might actually love.
Think of it has a safety school!!
You don't want to have full schedules to dwindle down to being released because you threw out houses early on!!! If you gey released and really wanted to be in a sorority your freshman year will be horrible.

or just put the ones you love first and if its meant to be it will be? this is so absurd. i know rush at Alabama is huge and chaotic but if you really click with the girls and they seem to like you don't rank them below a middle/bottom tier house just because you don't want to get cut.

It is not absurd it is the truth. You know if you have a chance at a top house and if my advice applies to you then be smart about it! My roommate went from 12 parties to THREE! Then only one pref. She got lucky and really wished she had done thibgs different.

^^ seriously listen to this. If you're from far away, with a low GPA and low involvement, be realistic with yourself ahead of time so you don't get screwed at pref.

Very true. I had a 2.9 and an elitist attitude and guess where that got me? Having a horrible year looking into what I wamted. Don't get me wrong I started having fun and enjoying college by Halloween but I worked hard on my grades and didn't get into any trouble. Dont get me wrong, yoh do you and I jad a pretty great year. I went to plenty of parties and had a blast but I xant wait to rish again

I was an OOS girl with no connections and even though my conversations at KD, PM, and AGD were about the same as my conversations at a few new row houses, I ranked the new row houses higher because I understood my chances at the most distinctly "southern" old row houses were slim. I ended up with a decent schedule every round because I took the geographic diversity of houses into account when ranking.

I agree somewhat with post #2 because I think if you really really love a house you shouldn't count yourself "out" and rank it at the bottom just because they have a high GPA and you don't, they have a reputation for wanting connections and you don't have them, etc.

BUT there are so many houses in the first two rounds that you are probably going to end up feeling roughly the same about a lot of them - so in those cases definitely think strategically.

So so so true! Keep your options open! You will feel the same about so many houses. This is the only way to play the systems if you have ANY ISSUES AT ALL
