in-state vs oos girls

by: 21

What are some examples of how In-State girls clash with OOS girls in the Old Row sororities? I'm a legacy to 2 Old Row groups with a sitting sister in one of them at another school, and I am seriously considering those two. I've heard that there can be conflict between the two groups of girls, but what happens specifically? If it's just that the in-state girls have their own clique of friends that they were friends with since 5 years old, then I can understand that and deal with that. But is there anything else that's really THAT bad? I looked at the officer lists and I see girls from OOS as officers, so I wouldn't think it gets too deep into politics either.

I'm from Texas, so if it gets really bad I guess I can just make friends with other girls from my homestate too, but I'd prefer to meet people from all over. Is this realistically possible or do girls just self-sort into cliques based on hometowns?

Just throwing this out there to set your expectations in line. Just because your sister is an XYZ at another school in NO WAY means you'll get a bid from that house here. You're only a shoe-in if your sister is an active in a house here.

Hey! Thanks for the advice. I'm really aware that it's by no means a guarantee at all and I'm keeping my options open, but I am also aware that being such a "strong" legacy will probably get me cut from other chapters later in the week if they see me keep my legacy houses as well.

I don't personally know anyone in the houses, but the area of my city has a lot of greek influence and I've gotten some rec letters from alums who have known me since birth. My sister's in another SEC school and has met some members of the Alabama chapter of her sorority at football games, spring break, etc. They've gotten in touch with me through social media and they've been super nice, but I know that it probably doesn't mean much and it could just be a fake front.

Having an active sister doesn't make you a strong legacy unless she's at the school where you're rushing. She may as well be an alum. She has no pull at Alabama. You're just a regular legacy, not a "strong" one, whatever that means.

O think the answer to your questions is yes.

There are example of in state girls who stick with who they know.

AND examples of girls who branch out.

With 400 girls in a sorority and 140 or so in a pledge class you get a mix of it all IN EVERY HOUSE.

Go where you feel comfortable, the rest will fall into place.

Main thing is northern OOS are just so direct, while southern girls are more passive aggressive. Look and see if there are northern OOS in leadership at old row. Not many. Southern OOS same as In-state.

Mostly the instate girls stick together, but they also stick with the southern girls from Atlanta, nola, nashville, nc, etc. So the officers you're seeing that are out of state are girls who are most likely friends with all of the in state girls from mobile, Birmingham, Montgomery, etc. there's not direct conflict rhat I'm aware of but the girls from the north/west definitely stick together and the southern girls definitely don't go out of their way to include them

Go look at their officers on their websites. KD, KKG, and DDD have almost ALL in state girls. If you're OOS you can basically forget having any sort of leadership position in some of these houses. OOS girls are also reprimanded more often in some of them because in state girls are more willing to turn a blind eye to the girls they met at summer camp 10 years ago.

Not a strong legacy and no one is going to know/care where you are going back unless you tell them.

If you are really from Texas, you should know all this. Seems odd.

Anyway, you will fall in with the other OOS girls at most old rows and find friends but hard to break (but why want to?) into cliques and there are cliques.

Hey girl! Im an OOS northern girl in a very in-state old row Alabama sorority. The main thing I have noticed is that the in-state/ southern girls have different morals, were raised differently, and act a certain way (its kinda hard to explain). Most are extremely polite, big into southern hospitality, never swear, always keeping it classy, go to church on sunday. It's not a bad thing at all, but Its just kinda a cultural shock to people like us from the north who are more laid back, okay with swearing or not holding a door open for someone, and not attending church lol. Definitely not something I was use to, however you learn to embrace each others differences and I have made some awesome friends in-state, OOS, southern, northern wherever, don't worry too much about it!! Yes there are cliques, yes most are (the Alabama girls and the oos girls). However there are going go be cliques in every sorority, its not like we all hate each other because of where we are from!!! everyone just has their group of friends and you will definitely find your place old row or new row.

Here's a reverse example for you-- I'm from a state bordering Alabama in a very (very) out of state sorority. Not exactly what I wanted for myself, sometimes it's frustrating when my sisters try to change the way my sorority is to a more "northern" style. There's definitely some clashing, mostly due to personality styles, and I'm sure it's the same when the situation is flipped.
