rush for english year abroad
by: BritgirlIm going on my year abroad this fall and going to rush, will many houses think about giving me a bid? (i can get a few letters of rec even though im English)

You may certainly go thru recruitment, and it will give you a unique American experience. Sorority bids have been given to foreign students by a few orgs. If you are truly looking to participate in leadership, scholarship, and service activities with the bonus of lifelong friends, registration opens May 1st and until then the greek life webpages are yours to peruse.

but she's only staying for a year. sororities certainly give bids to foreign girls but those girls stay all 4 years.

Houses are NOT going to extend bids to girls they know for a FACT will not be able to pay dues for all four years. You aren't just questionable, you will straight-up not be contributing to the chapter past year 1. It's a much better investment for the sorority to give that bid to a girl that intends on being involved/financially contributing for at least two or three years, ideally four.

She's British, not Canadian. When houses say they're interational it's because they have chapters in Canada. No NPC has a chapter in the UK. OP, a British friend of mine did a semester abroad at Columbia and got into AXO but I think you'd have a rough time at Bama. Worth a shot but I wouldn't necessarily get your hopes up. Best of luck!

definitely still rush, regardless of what everyone else is saying!! you might as well go for it and let the houses decide whether or not to give u a bid. dont let anonymous ppl on greekrank discourage you!!!! no one on here can 100% speak for the entire greek community anyway so who knows!! good luck to you!!

How is the 1-year potentially taking away a spot from a 4-year if everyone that maximizes their options gets a bid?

Everyone who maximizes their options gets a bid IF you make it to pref. You're not guaranteed a bid right off the bat. Say AOII really liked foreign girl and another girl, and didn't realize foreign girl is studying abroad and not just doing college in the US. They like foreign girl a little bit better so they put her before other girl on the list. Other girl gets cut from AOII which was her favorite and maybe she was cut from all the other houses too, who knows.
