rushing again sophomore year

by: sophomore pnm

I rushed this fall and pledged a house but it didn't feel like a good fit for me so I dropped after a couple months. I had a lot going on first semester and I had very difficult classes. As a result, my GPA was extremely low. This semester, my GPA is/will be very high. I'm trying to get involved in a couple organizations on campus (I know it's a little late, but I've been unsuccessful with trying to contact them) and I've been talking to girls that I've met/are friends with and im on a couple of their "rush lists". I've read through Greek rank and I'm becoming increasingly worried that I will have an awful rush and get dropped from every house this upcoming fall because of my overall GPA. I know I have friends pulling for me in their houses but will that be enough? I don't want to depend on them to get me into a house. I want to know if there's absolutely anything I can do to improve my chances during rush. Also, I've heard from multiple actives that sophomores will be able to get any house they want because of an upperclassman quota, yet when I read through the posts on this site, everyone says the complete opposite. Which is accurate? Weird that I'm turning to greek rank for advice but I want honest (and hopefully not rude) opinions/advice on if I even stand a chance at rush and if so, how I can improve in any area? I know I wrote so much, but thanks for reading!!! :)

I also forgot to add in that actives have told me that only a 2.5 college GPA is required of upperclassmen for rush. Is this true?

I wanted to rush as a sophomore and honestly I'll be lucky if my grades this semester get me up to a UA GPA over 2.8... I started in some pretty hard classes (they were next in the sequence of classes I was supposed to take and ended up with them freshmen year as I got a lot of credits through dual enrollment, but I was still advised not take these classes so early). Do sororities look at GPA's from high school and transfer credits as well? Do they see which classes you took that might have negatively affected your GPA? Or will I just automatically get dropped because of my low UA GPA?

@yikes, they don't look at all those GPA "details". If you are a sophomore they look at UA GPA (not H.S.).
I would recommend you get really good recs from Alumnae that will write something specific about you on the rec form or letter about you. And practice practice carrying on convo's where you will make actives feel comfortable.

You will not "automatically get dropped" from EVERY house if you have good recs. But don't be picky about which house -- be happy with ANY HOUSE.

@ rushing again sophomoresophomore pnm, You said "pledged a house but it didn't feel like a good fit for me so I dropped after a couple months"...
1. Why was it not a good fit for you?
2. How will a new house be a good fit now?

1. To start off, it was not my top choice on preference day. My top choice was a house I loved and felt was a good fit for me because my personality matched well with those of that house and the house was everything I wanted out of being in a sorority (involvement, sisterhood, good reputation). The house I pledged was a house I kept on my preference day list for the sake of "maximizing options". The girls in the house were nice and genuine, but I could not see myself in this house. Once I pledged, I decided to try it out because they always say to "trust the process" and maybe I was really meant to be here. In brief, I felt like the sisterhood was severely lacking. I could not establish a true friendship with any of these girls. Any time I would tell someone what my sorority was, they would be shocked and tell me that I definitely didn't belong in that sorority. Ironically, they would tell me I belonged in the sorority I originally listed as my top choice during rush. As time went on, I felt more and more uncomfortable coming to the house and socializing with these girls that I finally made the decision to drop. After dropping, all these girls (even some I was on good terms with) stopped acknowledging my existence or would be hateful towards me. That is not the kind of sisterhood I want to be apart of.

2. Any house that would not treat me the way I was treated in my old house is already a good fit. To narrow it down, after going through rush and meeting and befriending girls in other sororities throughout the year, I know which sororities would be a perfect match for me. Of course I'm more inclined to want the houses my friends are in, but I'm open to all houses that hold the same values as me and exceed in all aspects of what I would consider an ideal house for me. How well I get along with the girls and the philanthropy the house is involved with will be the key factors in deciding where I would like and hope to end up at.

Thank you for sharing how/why you decided to drop. I wish you the best trying again. It's not easy to rush again. Be prepared to to share "why you will commit for life" if you are invited to pref round. And even though you may be invited to join a house that your friends are in -- you will be a pledge. You will need to make GOOD friendships with you pledge class while your current friends are off doing other things. Think about how you will put yourself out there to do this.

Thank you! I know it won't be easy but I think it's definitely worth it to finally find my home away from home and sisters for life! I've discussed the whole friends with my pledge class/friends with this year's pledge class thing with my friends and I'm sure it won't be a problem. I'm a very social person. Always hung out with more than one group in high school. In a way, pledging as a sophomore is a good thing because it's like you're re-living freshmen year again. I'm excited. May I ask in the event I don't make it to preference day or don't have houses I want to pledge left, would the next best option be COB? I'm not too familiar about how the process works since I pledged a house last semester. COB has never really crossed my mind, but if that's my last option, could you explain how that would even work?

I know my sorority expects higher college GPAS. We drop anyone who's a grade risk, regardless of high school or college. If other houses do this too, it needs to be above a 3.0. You could be best friends with the president and some nationals won't let you take a grade risk. In addition, a lot of houses have a once cut always cut rule. But there is an upperclassmen quota, so you should be able to maximize your options if you get the gpa up.
