rushing

by: Yeah

I just have a couple questions that I hope y'all can help me with. I'm a Sophomore and just got honorably discharged from the Army and I have been attending the Bama By Distance program but this Summer will be my first semester on the main campus and I attend to rush in the fall.

From reading I understand that sometimes fraternities hold informal summer events that I could maybe get invited too. Do I contact the recruitment Chairs about notifying them about my interest via their Bama email address that's linked to the IFC page? Or how would you go about doing that?

Furthermore, I am rather older then the normal PNM since I joined the Army first out of highschool but I definitely want to join a fraternity but I am 23. I was born in Georgia and I am the first member of my family to attend UA and really do not have a legacy and I don't know any actives leading to no rec's and I've read on this site how that will be an issue. I have a 3.5 college GPA, but as far as the extracurricular activities, being in the Army they're a few and far between which worries me as well from reading. So with my age and my GPA being 3.5 and not really knowing anybody in the area, what's the real possibility of getting a legitimate look at getting a bid?

Sorry that this is alittle long but I appreciate your assistance.

First and foremost thank you for your service!!!

If you're interested in attending Spring/Summer rush parties then you should email the rush chairs to the houses you're interested in, and you can find their emails on their chapter websites.

When you rush frats, recs aren't really a thing, those are more for sororities. Also you're grades will make you stand out, I mean frats don't really care about grades but the fact that you have a pretty high GPA will help you somewhat. Also frats don't really care about extracurriculars... Obviously you were busy with the Army so they'll understand that. Also the fact that you're from the South will help you too.

Honestly you'll probably have a relatively easy time during rush. The only thing that might be of worry is your age. Personally I don't know of any frat guys that came through rush at your age or really anyone that went through rush above 20 years old. Also you may find it hard to make friend in your pledge class considering your age difference. Besides that though, you sound like a decent rushee. I'd suggest to add yourself into the groupme of guys rushing this fall and to email rush chairs asap.

Good luck!

I think you'll have a better shot in Jefferson houses than University houses. That being said I think all frats will consider you even if you are older since you were in the army and serving our great country!
