tips for anti greek parents

by: Distressed PNM

Don't get me wrong they both had very active social party life college experiences themselves so it isn't that. My Aunt went to Bama and lives there in T town and my 2 favorite cousins go to there now. Last year I spent my HS SB on campus and fell head over heels. Even with their input and my research on costs and all the pros they are totally againist it. From what I see living in house can even be cheaper than dorms and meal plans. Basically they have agreed to deduct the cost of a regular meal plan and on campus dorm if I live inhouse from dues. I can absolutely cover the rest on my own (You wouldn't believe how much people can charge for child care in California...) Did anyone else have this experience? I don't want to miss out on what I want but I don't want to be made fun of by my parents and also non greek siblings when I go home. :(

Basically I knew my parents were like that so I started saving years a head of time and summers. I've paid for everything sorority related. Including living in house. Tough? Hell yeah. When I am home I just brag about my gpa being higher than my twin sister and older brother who are GDIs at other sec schools and talk alot about philanthropy and fundraising. Also I am on SGA and well one is a bar back and the other just parties. Good luck hun!

Honestly you wouldn't believe the amount of people on campus who rushed both fraternities and sororities, got bids, and ended up dropping because they couldn't afford it. I have a lot of friends who come from relatively wealthy homes and got bids from really nice houses but their parents literally wouldn't pay for it... I'm going to be honest, Greek life here is expensive, especially if you're already paying the full OOS tuition and you're on a budget. Greek life expenses are much more than just dues and the meal plan. You have to also think about the t-shirts, swap attire, big/little presents, covers for fundraisers/bars, etc. You also need to consider the fact that every single sorority here has different dues, ranging from roughly $3,000/semester to almost %6,000/semester. Also keep in mind that it's never guaranteed you will live in house, unless you're on the Exec Board.
Overall, over the next few months really express your desire to join Greek life to your parents. Have a serious conversation and explain why Greek life is so important to you. If they still say no, then I mean it is what it is at that point. You can obviously try and pay for dues on your own, but it may be extremely hard to do so if you're not the most organized and driven person.
As a girl, you'll still get into any frat parties, you'll still meet frat guys, you'll still make friends. Greek life isn't the end all be all. You may feel a little left out but your social calendar depends completely on you.

What started as babysitting job when I was 14 turned into a very well paid part time nanny job. As in last summer I went to St. Lucia for a month, had my own room and made 4k just so the parents could have fun. Plus I entered every essay scholarship and my parents promised me if I kept a 3
.5 I could go anywhere If I got accepted. Money isn't really the issue. Just all strictly sorority expenses would be on me. For example if I wouldn't I couldn't live in house they would pay for a dorm just not an apartment.

You say money isn't the issue but from what you've said it sounds like that's the exact problem...?

- Don't rush if you know you can't afford it
- You aren't guaranteed to live in the house, so you'll likely be paying for your own apartment for at least one year while you're here
- If your parents actually cared about you they'd pay for your sorority fees since it would make you happy

Average dues for a semester in house
6200-1150 (middle meal plan)- 4500 (dorm)= 550+500(gifts tshirts and other stuff)=1050. That would leave you with a $2000 cost a year roughly.
Just do the nanny thing on breaks and its obvious you are fine!

But please try to convince them to let you get an apartment instead. Upperclassmen in dorms is seen as very weird here. As for their attitudes just do what the other girl say. Talk up all the good. Or just don't bring it up. Anyway ROLL TIDE and absolutely rush.
