sorority reputations

by: PNM

So being that every sorority as a "stereotype," what does that mean for an individual girl in that sorority? Like say ABC sorority is known for everything that implies a bottom house/has the worst reputation. When you tell someone that you're in ABC, will people use that reputation against you by looking down on you or just not wanting to associate with you?

No. And if they do, you don't want to associate with those types of people anyway - regardless of what tier house you are in!

On campus it doesn't matter as everyone is nice and tries to get along.
However frats tend to praise their brothers when they are dating or invite girls from certain sororities. This then leads to hate on this site for those sororities.

MOST people in Greek life are very welcoming and genuinely nice. I'm in a house that's considered bottom of the middle tier on this site and I used to worry about what people would think if they asked what sorority I was in. Turns out no one cares about ranks. I can honestly say that no one asks you how your sorority ranks on this site and no one is rude about it. Every time I've told other girls what house I'm in they say "oh nice and I'm in this house" or "oh I loved that house during rush" blah blah blah. No one looks down on you for being in a sorority with a "negative" reputation, and if they do, as the person above already said, they're not worth your time. Everyone just wants to have fun and the majority of people aren't petty enough to judge you based on what sorority YOU CHOSE.

Everything said above is true; however, your own individual reputation certainly does matter. If you are truly worried what people think then focus on your own attitude and behavior.

Does 'the machine' have influence in this regard? Do they try to influence perceptions?

lol no. sororities have total control over who they can give bids to and how they themselves impact their own reputations. the machine has nothing to do with influence over sorority reputations. all the machine does is back certain candidates that influence campus and sometimes state politics.

Ranks only matter to like 25 percent of the pnms, and they are over it by the middle of September. By that time they have come to realize that you are not defined by your sorority and that it is the person, not the letters on your shirt, that matters to anybody that is worth a minute of your time.
